SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wildcat volleyball team rebounded from Friday's tough loss at Furman with a dominant 3-0 victory over Wofford on Saturday evening. The 'Cats took the match by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17. The win marked their first Southern Conference victory of the season as they move to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Caroline Brown led Davidson as she finished with a team-high 11 kills and added 12 digs. Molly Crenshaw led the defensive effort with 15 digs, while Anastasia Owen recorded six. Ariel Ley had 31 assists, four kills and three digs, and Megan Chamberlin led the team in serving with seven aces and a hitting percentage of .571. Tindall Sewell also hit .500 on the evening and finished with seven kills and two block assists.
“I was very proud of our team tonight,” said head coach Chris Willis. “The girls controlled their emotions, attitude and effort and it resulted in a great performance. They could have shut down after losing last night. Instead, they dug down deep and found out what they were made of.”
The 'Cats hit an impressive .417 as a team, while the Terriers hit .233. Amanda Liguori had nine kills for Wofford, while Reagan Stiles finished with nine digs. Bekah Dorsey and Tara Gough had 16 and 14 assists, respectively, while three different Terriers recorded a block solo.
Davidson dominated early in the first set, as Chamberlin served up six straight points, including back-to-back aces, as the 'Cats jumped out to an 8-1 advantage. The Terriers came within three on a kill by Wendy Burnett, and cut the deficit to one on a point from Liguori. Ley recorded a kill to keep the 'Cats in front, but the Terriers came back to tie the set 16-16 on a kill by Arden Anderson. Ley responded with another kill and an ace to put Davidson back in front and the momentum was able to carry the 'Cats to the 25-20 win.
Chamberlin had another ace on her way to serving three straight points early in the second set to put the Wildcats ahead 5-2. Back-to-back errors would cost the 'Cats the lead as the Terriers took over at 8-6, but a quartet of kills from Taylor Pisel tied the set at 11-11. Sewell put things back in Davidson's favor and added back-to-back kills soon after to give the 'Cats the 15-12 lead. Chamberlin served up three more points to put the lead at 19-13 before a trio of kills from Brown put the set away at 25-16.
In the third set, it was again Chamberlin serving up points as a kill by Ley gave Davidson the 4-1 lead. A flurry of Terrier errors stretched the advantage to 8-2 in favor of the 'Cats, who never looked back from there. Chamberlin recorded two more aces and a pair of kills before an attacking error on Wofford gave the 'Cats the 25-17 set win and the 3-0 sweep.
Davidson will return to Belk Arena next Saturday when it plays host to The Citadel at 2 p.m.
