DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team will take part in the National Lacrosse Conference Cancer Awareness Week when they travel to Howard this Sunday, April 15.
Davidson will be one of eight NLC teams taking part in the cause as the Wildcats' cause will be for breast cancer. It's all part of the initiative to help battle the fight against cancer as all NLC teams will start the cause on Friday and run through the weekend.
"It's great that all the coaches in the league wanted to get together and participate in such a great cause," said NLC Commissioner Steve Corder. "The weekend is a great opportunity to raise money and help a lot of local charities in the fight against cancer and it really shows what collegiate sports is all about."
Home teams from the conference will wear cancer awareness t-shirts while warming up, while some schools will be selling t-shirts with all proceeds going to local cancer charities. Teams will also set up a donation table at home sites for all of those fans interested in helping out to this great cause.
The Wildcats (4-8, 1-2 NLC) will be looking to get back on track after having dropped their last three games to Oregon, Jacksonville and Detroit. They will play at Howard on Sunday at 1 p.m. in an NLC matchup.
Ann Fucigna and Emily Cooke have led the way offensively for Davidson, combining for 48 goals. Fucigna paces the team in goals (28), assists (14) and points (42), while Cooke is second in goals (20) and tied for second with 23 points.
Abigail Doelger and Diane Girling have been Davidson's two best defenders. The duo have 25 groundballs each, while Doelger has a team-best 15 caused turnovers and Girling 14. The freshman Girling is also second on the team in draw controls with 26.
Jessica Melby has started all 12 games between the pipes, tallying 107 saves. Freshman Katy Boyle has seen action in three games with seven saves and picked up her first collegiate win in a 21-15 game at home vs. Presbyterian.
After facing Howard on Sunday, the Wildcats return home for a pair of games against Longwood (April 20, 7 p.m.) and Liberty (April 22, 1 p.m.) to close out their home slate of games.
