DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson begins its stretch of National Lacrosse Conference games to finish out the regular season by opening up April with a matchup on Sunday against last year's top team in the Jacksonville Dolphins at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (4-6, 1-0 NLC) begins a run of six straight National Lacrossee Conference games to finish out the year by hosting Jacksonville (7-2, 1-0 NLC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
It's a big weekend for the Dolphins, who also play at High Point on Friday night. The Dolphins were runner-up last year at the NLC Tournament to the Panthers.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The two schools are knotted up at 2-all in the all-time series, dating back to 2010. Last year saw the Dolphins sweep Davidson with wins of 13-9 and 19-7, the last win coming in the NLC Tournament.
In the tournament game, Davidson had a brief 3-2 lead early, but saw JU run off 14 unaswered goals and the Wildcats were never able to recover. Ann Fucigna, who had three goals and an assist in the contest, finished the season with 49 goals, tying a Davidson single-season record. Her 60 points for the year were the third-most in Davidson's single-season history.
Last Time Out...
... Davidson — Sophomore Ann Fucigna continued her torrid scoring of late, with three goals, but it was not enough as the Oregon Ducks controlled the tempo of the game and took an 8-4 decision on Tuesday evening.
Fucigna, fresh off the National Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor, pushed her goal total to 24 on the season as she scored all three of her goals in the second half. She has scored 11 goals in the last three games and registered 17 points in all.
Davidson fell behind 6-0 after a half of play and never was able to recover, though it held the Ducks to just two goals in the second period.
Mary Leonard added the Wildcats other goal, an unassisted score with 23:58 left in the game to make it 7-2. It was the freshman's 11 goal of the season.
Davidson was held to just 12 shots, but tied Oregon with 18 groundballs and caused a season-best 12 turnovers. Diane Girling had three of those caused turnovers, while Paige Logan and Catherine Schmidt had two apiece.
... Jacksonville — The Dolphins, who play at High Point on Friday night, took on Fresno State in their most recent game (March 27). Thirteen players scored, including junior Rachel Hannon who set a school record, and Jacksonville outshot Fresno 46-10 in a big 21-2 win.
Sophomore Morgan Derner led the charge with five goals, giving her 19 in the last four games.
The first two goals of the game launched the Dolphins to an 11-0 halftime lead and it grew to 18-0 before the Bulldogs got on the board.
Goalkeepers Karli Tobin and Asia Moore split time and each recorded six saves.
Not only was the JU offense hitting on all cylinders, the defense put a vise-grip on Fresno holding the Bulldogs to only four shots in the first half and six in the second. Fresno committed 22 errors.
