DAVIDSON, N.C. – Five different Wildcats scored multiple goals, led by Ann Fucigna's three scores, but it was not enough to offset a 9-1 run rattled by Jacksonville that stretched over both halves as Davidson fell 19-14 on Sunday afternoon in a women's National Lacrosse Conference match at Richardson Stadium.
JU (8-3, 2-1 NLC) turned a 7-all tie with 4:47 left in the first half into a 16-8 lead with under 20 minutes to go in the game by scoring the final three goals of the first period and then adding to it by netting six of the first seven goals of the second half.
The Dolphins' Nikki Erdely, Jen Cosgrove and Nicole Albino all scored three times, while Ali Hoffman, Morgan Derner and Brittney Orashen added two goals apiece.
Fucigna continued her hot-scoring touch, netting three goals and assisting on three more for six points. She has registered 14 goals and nine assists in the last four games.
Jenna Mugele, Emily Rademacher, Emily Cooke and Alanna Parker all added two goals each, while Erin Doherty, Erin Keitel and Liz Edwards netted a goal apiece.
Davidson (4-7, 1-1 NLC) erased a 5-1 deficit early in the first half with a 5-1 run of its own to knot things up at 6-apiece. Fucigna had three of the points during the run on two goals and an assist, capping off the rally at the 7:13 mark by assisting on Rademacher's sixth goal of the season.
Mugele tied it once more at 7-7 off a pass from Doherty in the circle with 5:22 left. It would be the last time?Davidson would be that close to Jacksonville, which closed the half in a flurry. The Dolphins scored the final three goals, including one with one second left on the clock for a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Parker countered JU's first goal of the new stanza with her 12th score of the season at the 25:58 mark to make it 11-8.
Jacksonville's Jen Cosgrove then sparked a 5-0 run over the next six minutes with a pair of scores and Albino finished it with two of her own for a 16-8 JU lead.
Down 18-10, Davidson made one last push. Fucigna tallied her 28th score of the season to make it 18-11. Then after a Dolphin goal, Doherty countered with a free-position goal at the 5:46 mark. The Wildcats would get three more goals in the last 1:25 of the game for the final deficit of five goals. Keitel earned her sixth assist on Cooke's 19th goal, while Mugele and Rademacher each added free-position goals for the final of 19-14.
The 'Cats were 4-for-8 on free-position attempts, but JU went 9-for-12 and had a 39-25 edge on shots.
Doherty again led the team in draw controls with six of the Wildcats' 14 for the game, while Abigail Doelger had three groundballs. Diane Girling hauled in four draw controls and had a pair of groundballs.
Jessica Melby stopped 12 shots, her fourth game with double-figure saves as she fell to 3-7 between the pipes. For Jacksonville, Karli Tobin and Asia Moore split time in goal and combined for five saves.
The Wildcats, who just wrapped up playing nine of their last 10 games at home, hit the road for a pair of contests. They will first travel to Detroit for an NLC matchup on Sunday, April 8, at 1 p.m., before going to Howard, April 15.
