DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Ann Fucigna continued her torrid scoring of late, with three goals, but it was not enough as the Oregon Ducks controlled the tempo of the game and took an 8-4 decision on Tuesday evening at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
Fucigna, fresh off the National Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor, pushed her goal total to 24 on the season as she scored all three of her goals in the second half. She has scored 11 goals in the last three games and registered 17 points in all.
Davidson (4-6) fell behind 6-0 after a half of play and never was able to recover, though it hold the Ducks to just two goals in the second period. Oregon (6-4) was able to control possession the major of the game and played shutdown defense when the Wildcats did get a chance to try and score.
Mary Leonard added the Wildcats other goal, an unassisted score with 23:58 left in the game to make it 7-2. It was the freshman's 11 goal of the season.
The Ducks' Shannon Propst had herself a first half to remember, scoring three straight goals and assisting on another in the first 30 minutes of action. She finished with a pair of assists for five points. Five other Ducks scored single goals, while Kate Cathell picked up an assist.
Davidson was held to just 12 shots, but tied Oregon with 18 groundballs and caused a season-best 12 turnovers. Diane Girling had three of those caused turnovers, while Paige Logan and Catherine Schmidt had two apiece.
Jessica Melby played all 60 minutes between the pipes and finished with eight saves, six of them in the second half.
The two teams where playing each other for the first time since 2007. Davidson finished up its non-conference slate of games tonight for the season, going 3-6 in those contests.
The Wildcats wrap up a stretch of where they have played nine of their 10 games from Feb. 25 to April 1 at home by hosting NLC-foe Jacksonville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
