Davidson Lacrosse Drops 12-6 Decision in Season-Opener at American

DAVIDSON, N.C. – American had three players record hat tricks on the day and Davidson was unable to recover from a 6-2 halftime deficit in falling 12-6 on the road in its season-opener on Saturday in women's lacrosse.

American's (1-0) Emily Burton, Emily Maher and Lauren Schoenberger each tallied three goals on the afternoon. All three helped the Eagles jump out to a 4-0 lead early.

The 'Cats (0-1) had three players record a pair of goals each in the contest. Freshman Emily Cooke (Woodstock, Md.) netted her first two career collegiate goals, scoring Davidson's first goal of the year at the 14:03 mark.

Returning leading scorer Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) pushed her multi-goal streak to 11 straight with two goals and added an assist. Senior Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) rounded out the trio of Wildcat scorers with two of her own scores.

Erin Doherty (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Emily Rademacher (Lynchburg, Va.) each picked up an assist.

Goalie Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) closed with 14 saves between the pipes and picked up a groundball.

Down 6-1, Cooke and Fucigna scored back-to-back goals to close the first half and open the new stanza to bring the Wildcats within three.

American answered with a 6-0 run to made it 12-3 with 7:31 remaining and Davidson never was able to recover. Schoenberger and Kimberly Collins each scored two of the six goals.

Davidson did finish the game on a positive note, rattling off three goals in a row, two of them by Keitel, in the final six minutes to make the final deficit six.

Davidson begins a six-game homestand with a 12 p.m. contest against Navy next Saturday, Feb. 25. The Wildcats will also host UC Davis, Vermont, St. Francis (Pa.), Siena and Lafayette during the home tour, running until March 14.
