MOREHEAD, Ky.Jonathan Carkhuff became Davidson's all-time pass completions leader, but Morehead State was victorious over the Wildcats, 49-14, in Pioneer Football League action Saturday afternoon in Jayne Stadium.

Rees Macshara led Morehead State (3-6, 2-4 PFL) with 126 yards on 23 carries and two rushing touchdowns. Blake Stanley added 78 rushing yards on 15 carries, as well as two touchdowns on the ground. Zack Lewis completed 20-of-30 attempts for 267 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Donte Sawyer was his top target with nine catches for 128 yards.

Carkhuff completed 22-of-41 attempts for 177 yards for Davidson (1-8, 1-5 PFL) and was intercepted three times. He became Davidson's all-time completions leader with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Lanny Funsten on the 'Cats' second drive of the game to tie it at 7-7. Carkhuff broke the record previously held by Ryan Alexander (2004-08) of 775, and now has 795 for his career.

The touchdown reception also allowed Funsten to tie Davidson's all-time mark in the category. He now has 19 for his career to equal Barrett Johnson (2000-03) and Gifford Piercy (1977-80). He finished the game with seven catches for 82 yards.

Davidson's Bryant Bednarek led all defenders with a career-high 15 tackles.

Morehead State struck first, as Macshara broke through the line to rush 15 yards for a touchdown on the Eagles' first drive of the game.

Carkhuff and Funsten took advantage of a blown coverage, as Funsten was alone in the end zone to make the easy touchdown catch on the ensuing Davidson drive, but Cyrus Strahm returned the kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown to put the Eagles back ahead, 14-7, with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter.

The remainder of the first quarter was scoreless, as Davidson was unable to take advantage of an interception by Adam Dulberger late in the quarter.

MSU went ahead 21-7 on a six-yard touchdown run by Blake Stanley with 10:26 remaining in the half. Chazzo Habliston punted 41 yards on Davidson's next drive, and Robert Klein recovered a fumble by Justin Cornwall on the play to give the Wildcats the ball back at MSU's 38, but the 'Cats went three-and-out.

Lewis found to Luke Keller open on the left sideline with a screen pass that Keller was able to take 35 yards to the Davidson 5-yard line to setup the Eagles' next touchdown. Macshara eventually rushed in from three yards out for a 28-7 lead with 3:44 remaining in the half.

Davidson moved to midfield in an attempt to halve the lead before the halftime break, but Dexter Geohagen intercepted a deep pass intended for Danny Martinez at the MSU 5-yard line to preserve the three-touchdown advantage.

A five-yard rushing touchdown by Blake Stanley gave MSU a 35-7 lead on its second drive of the second half. Lewis found Jaison Yoshmura on a 28-yard touchdown pass and Brandon Bornheiser on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 49-7 lead after three quarters.

“It was extremely disappointing for me as a head coach to have our football team come out and perform like we did today,” said Davidson head coach Tripp Merritt. “When you get down to a really good, athletic team, it is hard to come back.”

Freshman quarterback Connor Hall found classmate Desi Dockery with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:44 remaining in the game for the final margin. The touchdown pass and reception were the first of their respective careers.

Davidson will play its third road game in four weeks next Saturday at Valparaiso, and then conclude the season Saturday, Nov. 17 at home against San Diego.

NOTES: MSU's kickoff return for a touchdown was the first Davidson had allowed since Oct. 15, 2011 at San Diego … Davidson had its three-game winning streak over MSU snapped … Lanny Funsten extended his Davidson career leads in receptions to 215, and receiving yards to 2,621 … Davidson had not allowed more than 38 points in a game this season.
