DAVIDSON, N.C. – Down 2-0 early, Davidson exploded for five unanswered goals led by Julia Singley's career-best six points on two goals and two assists as the Wildcats took home a 5-2 decision over visiting College of Charleston Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in a key Southern Conference women's soccer matchup.
Davidson evened its record on the season at 6-6-2, while moving to 4-2 in league play. The Cougars, who were picked second in the preseason league poll, fell to 3-9-1, 2-3-1 in the SoCon
Tied 2-2, Stephanie Piperno dribbled down on the near sideline and set a cross to the far left side of the box, where Singley was wide open. The sophomore gathered in the ball and drilled home the game-winner.
Singley was not done as she returned the favor to Piperno by feeding her classmate with a touch pass into the box and Piperno fired a shot to near post. It was the sophomore's second goal of the year.
Kelsey Krueger capped off the big scoring afternoon for the Wildcats with a header in the box after Singley sent a nice pass into the junior.
Singley started to the comeback for Davidson when in the 42nd minute she gathered in a loose corner kick ball and shot home her first goal of the game to make it 2-1.
Just a minute into the second half, the Wildcats earned a penalty kick with a foul inside the box. Julie Calhoun converted on the free kick to knot things up at 2-all.
CofC had the early momentum with a pair of goals off set corner kicks, including a Jade Reyonld' header just a minute and 23 seconds in to the start of the game. The Cougars' controlled possession until Singley's strike at the 41:18 mark and from there it was all Davidson.
The Wildcats hit the road again, playing two of their final three road games next weekend, Oct. 12-14. They will face UNCG Friday the 12th at 7 p.m. and then close out the weekend Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest.
Game Notes: Davidson ran its record to 12-6 all-time vs. CofC since first meeting in 1993 … The 'Cats now have a four-game win streak at home vs. the Cougars … the Wildcats improved to 3-2-2 at Alumni Stadium … head coach Greg Ashton is now six wins from 100 for his nine-year career at Davidson.
