WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kevin Moore reached the final of his respective singles draw and Alex Howard won the consolation side of his singles bracket as the Davidson Wildcat men's tennis team competed at the Wake Forest Invitational over the weekend, Oct. 12-14.
The 'Cats were playing their third Fall tennis event of the season, with eight players taking part in both singles and doubles over the weekend.
Moore, coming off a singles title at Davidson's Jim Causey Invite a weekend ago, nearly captured his second when he reached the finals of the D1 Singles draw. The senior opened his weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Liberty and then netted another straight set, 6-2, 7-5, win over an Old Dominion player. In the semifinals, Moore took a three-set affair (6-3, 0-6, 7-6) to reach the finals. He battled to the end in the finals, only to fall just short in a hard-fought three-setter, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Freshman Howard continued his impressive run during his first Fall season, by winning the consolation side of the D1 singles draw. After falling in his first match, the freshman earned a 6-2, 6-3 win and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over Longwood to reach the finals. He did not stop there, finishing off the strong weekend with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.
In the 1 Singles and D2 Singles brackets, Nicky Kunz and Ethan Kallick finished sixth, respectively, in each draw. Kunz won his first match over Richmond, 6-3, 7-5, but dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to host Wake Forest. He came back to score a three set win, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 to reach the fifth place match, before falling to close out his weekend.
Kallick won his first match, 6-4, 6-2 over a Longwood player, but fell in his quarterfinal match, 7-6, 6-2. He regrouped with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Richmond, before also falling in his final match of the weekend, 6-3, 6-4.
Robert Lightbourn and Connor Evins each picked up a win over the weekend in singles play.
In doubles action, Chris Mark and Moore had the best showing, reaching the consolation finals of the B Doubles draw. After falling 8-4 in their opening match, the duo came back with 8-4 and 8-6 wins over their next two opponents. They eventually fell in the finals, 8-6, to a pair from Furman.
Evins and Kallick teamed up together in the C Doubles draw and won their first match, 8-4, vs. Richmond. They lost in the quarterfinals, 8-6, to host Wake Forest, but reached the fifth place finals with an 8-3 triumph. They finished fifth overall after scoring a solid 8-6 win over UNCG.
Davidson will head to the ITA Carolina Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C., this weekend, Oct. 18-21.
