WILMINGTON, N.C. — Senior Joe Schafer, junior Connor Evins and the rest of Davidson men's tennis team finished up their 2012 Fall season with a trip to the UNC Wilmington Invitational over the weekend, Nov. 4-6, at the UNCW courts.
Schafer led the Wildcats in singles action with a 2-1 record and picked up a doubles win. Evins had a strong weekend as well, going 2-1 in singles and teaming up with Nicky Kunz at No. 3 doubles for a perfect 3-0 mark.
The 'Cats No. 1 singles player, Schafer, opened the three-day event with a three-set win vs. Boston College, taking home a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 triumph. After suffering 7-6, 6-4 defeat to East Tennessee State, the senior closed out the invitational with a 7-6, 6-3 victory against host UNC Wilmington.
Evins netted a pair of wins vs. Boston College (6-1, 7-5) and ETSU (6-7, 6-2, 6-2) at the No. 5 singles flight.
Kunz, Chris Mark, Kevin Moore, Alex Howard and Ethan Kallick each registered a singles win apiece. Mark and Howard prevailed in three-setters vs. the Boston College Eagles, with Mark taking a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 decision and Howard pulling through a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 match.
In doubles action, Evins and Kunz won all three of their matches vs. the Eagles, Bucs and Seahawks. The duo opened with an 8-5 decision vs. Boston College, then captured a pair of 8-4 wins vs. ETSU and UNCW.
Schafer's doubles win came with Kallick as the pair pulled through in a tiebreaker to take a 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles vs. BC.
Davidson is off until starting up its Spring season towards the end of January. The Wildcats will look to improve on last season's 7-14 finish, 3-7 in SoCon play, as they will be led by seniors Schafer, Mark and Moore.
