ELON, N.C. – Despite putting 10 shots on goal, including a near game-winning header by Rachael Newmister at the end of regulation, Davidson was not able to kick one through in settling for a 0-0 draw on the road at Elon in women's soccer at Rudd Field Sunday afternoon.
Newmister nearly gave the 'Cats the road win, but Elon's (5-6-6, 3-1-4 SoCon) Kate Murphy saved the game for the Phoenix with 10 seconds remaining in the second period when she corralled Newmisters' header shot to keep the match scoreless in regulation. Murphy made another great save on a shot by Julia Singley in the 99th minute as well to keep the match going.
Davidson (6-7-3, 4-3-1 SoCon) finished with 17 shots and had a 5-0 advantage in corners.
Rachel Locke earned her fifth shutout of the season, second-most in the league. She had to stop just one shot as the Wildcat defense held Elon to just three shots overall.
Murphy finished with eight saves between the posts for her sixth shutout of the year.
The Wildcats come home for their final two home contests of the season at Alumni Stadium. They will host Wofford Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., honoring their four seniors for Senior Night. The 'Cats close out the 2012 home slate of games then against Furman Sunday at 2 p.m.
Game Notes: The Wildcats move to 3-5-1 on the road this year … Davidson is 7-1-1 in the last nine meetings vs. Elon … it was the first tie in the all-time series (12-6-1 in favor of Davidson) … head coach Greg Ashton remains six wins from 100 for his nine-year career at Davidson.
