DAVIDSON, N.C. – Megan Chamberlin had a season-best performance as the Wildcat volleyball team (7-10, 3-4 SoCon) dropped a Southern Conference match to Elon (10-12, 3-4 SoCon) by a score of 3-1 on Friday evening at Belk Arena. Davidson took the first set 25-18 before falling in the final three 27-29, 25-27 and 10-25.
Both teams had solid nights on the block, with Elon recording 14 to Davidson's 13 blocks.
Chamberlin had a career-high 17 kills on the night, hitting .293 in the match. She also recorded four digs, though it was Molly Crenshaw that led the way with 33. Her total allowed Crenshaw to move into fourth place in program history with 1,499 career digs. She also tallied two assists in the match.
Tindall Sewell hit .250 with 10 kills and had an impressive blocking effort. Sewell recorded two solo and five block assists, as did teammate Caroline Brown. Brown also had 12 kills and 23 digs. Sarah Roberts was another Wildcat with a career night, recording a personal-best 12 digs. Ariel Ley dished out 46 assists and had one of Davidson's three aces, while Morgan Shannon was responsible for seven digs.
Megan Gravley led the Phoenix with 15 kills, while Ana Nicksic had 46 assists. Ali Deatsch posted 24 digs on the night, followed by Chanelle Smith and Chelsea Rafetto each with 16. Maggie Reichard had a team-high three service aces, while Celia Eddy recorded two solos and seven block assists.
The Wildcats came out strong in the first set, taking a 5-0 lead and keeping it at five points at 10-5 on a kill from Chamberlin. They would increase their advantage to seven on an Elon attacking error, and never look back from there. The 'Cats would find themselves up 1-0 after the 25-18 win.
Set two was a battle from the start, as the Phoenix battled back from a 3-0 hole. An error by the Phoenix kept the 'Cats up by three at 10-7, and they would remain that way through 20-17. However Elon was able to make the comeback, tying the game at 23-23. After the two teams traded points, the Phoenix would nail an ace on the final play for the 29-27 win to tie the match at 1-1.
It was the Wildcats' turn to work their way back from a deficit in set three as they found themselves down 6-2 early on. They were able to tie the set at 10-10 on a Phoenix error before taking a 17-14 lead on an ace from Brown. Elon would once again make the late rally with a 7-2 scoring run tying the came once again at 23-23. The Phoenix would then complete the comeback to take the set 27-25 and give themselves the 2-1 lead in the match.
The two teams battled to start the fourth set, as a kill by Hannah Rau kept things tied at 6-6. However, the 'Cats would be no match for the Phoenix in the final set as Reichard served four straight points and was shortly followed by Daetsch, who served up six straight to give Elon the 18-7 lead. The Phoenix would then finish things off for the 25-10 set win and match victory.
The Wildcats will look to rebound Sunday when they host UNCG in a 2 p.m. match at Belk Arena.
