DAVIDSON, N.C. – Down 2-1 in the match, Davidson scrapped back and took the next two sets, including a thrilling 15-12 win in the decisive final set to take home a 3-2 match victory against UNCG Sunday afternoon at Belk Arena in Southern Conference volleyball action.
Set scores went 25-19, 19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12 in favor of the 'Cats.
The final set included seven ties, with the largest lead being two points for either team until the final three points of the set. Down 12-11, Hannah Rau hammered home a kill to knot things up at 12-all for the last tie of the game. Two errors by the Spartans (10-10, 4-4 SoCon) gave the Wildcats a 14-12 lead and Caroline Brown finished off the comeback win with a kill down the line for the 15-12 triumph.
Davidson finished its three-match homestand with a 1-2 mark as it ran its record to 8-10 overall and evened its league mark at 4-4.
Brown was one of three 'Cats to reach double digits in kills with 12. Tindall Sewell put away 15 swings and Megan Chamberlin earned 11 kills. The trio helped the Wildcats push the match to a fifth set with a combined nine kills in the fourth set and Chamberlin came up with a block to cap off the final fourth set win, 25-23.
Molly Crenshaw paced the defense with 32 digs, but she was not alone with Brown digging out 23 attacks and Jenna Ptaschinski getting 14. Ariel Ley had her usual strong game as the setter, picking up 51 assists, six kills and three digs. Much like Friday, Davidson was strong on the blocks, earning 10 as a team.
UNCG's Karrian Chambers paced the Spartans' offense with 19 kills, while Olivia Humphries and Morgan Freeman picked up 14 and 13, respectively. Ari Lysacek set up 38 kills, while Kellie Orewiler led three Spartans in digs with 36. Chambers was third with 17, next to Katherine Santiago's 20 digs.
The first set went back-and-forth, with Davidson holding a three-point advantage at 16-13 after a service ace by Ptaschinski, and a pair of kills from Sewell and Morgan Shannon. After UNCG came back to tie it up at 17-all with a kill from Vicky Harley, the 'Cats rattled off four of the next five points to earn a 21-18 lead and UNCG burned a timeout. Davidson continued to push and sealed the set-one win after two Spartan errors.
Racing out to an 8-2 lead, UNCG controlled the second set. A kill by Humphries made it 17-11, but Davidson charged back with a 5-0 run to make it 17-16. It was short-lived as the Spartans pushed its lead back to 21-16 on a Chambers kill. They finished it off by winning four of the next seven points for the 25-19 win.
Much was the same in the third set as UNCG doubled up the 'Cats 12-6 on a service ace from Chambers. She had seven kills in the set, while the Spartans hit .282 in cruising to the 25-16 win.
Davidson regrouped and battled all the way to the end in the fourth set. Neither team held a lead bigger than the four points UNCG had in the early going. The 'Cats held a 22-20 lead with a pair of kills from Brown, forcing UNCG to call a timeout. Kills by Chambers knotted things up again, 22-22, but this time a kill by Sewell and two attack errors by Chambers gave the Wildcats the 25-23 win.
The Wildcats begin a four-match road swing, starting with a trip to Chattanooga, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.
