CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A trio of Wildcats notched double digit kills as the Davidson volleyball team took a 3-1 loss to the Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday afternoon at Maclellan Gym. The Mocs took the match with set scores of 25-18, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-17.
The Wildcats are now 8-11 overall and are 4-5 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga moves to 10-14 on the season and is also 4-5 in conference play.
Tindall Sewell, Caroline Brown and Megan Chamberlin all recorded double digit kills, with Brown's 17 leading the way. Sewell was the 'Cats top hitter of the day, hitting .435 with 12 kills. She also added in a team-high three block assists. Chamberlin slammed down 11 kills and a service ace, while Hannah Rau chipped in with a pair of aces and a pair of block assists.
Brown, Molly Crenshaw and Jenna Ptaschinski each finished with double-digit digs, as Brown also led the defense with 24 in the match. Morgan Shannon finished a dig shy of joining them, with a total of nine. Crenshaw boasted 21 digs on the afternoon, along with three assists. Ariel Ley led the squad with 44 assists, five digs and a pair of block assists. The 'Cats finished the match hitting .179 with 6.0 team blocks.
The Mocs also had three players in double figures in kills with Briana Reid's 12 pacing the team. Bridget Camacho had 35 assists, with Paula Passmore chipping in 28 digs. Lauren Gainer had a team-high four block assists as the Mocs posted 8.0 team blocks and hit .190.
Chattanooga took a 9-3 lead to start the first set, though the Wildcats would cut it to three at 12-9 on a kill by Sewell. A kill by Ley kept the 'Cats within four, but Davidson couldn't keep the match alive as Reid slammed down a kill to give the Mocs the 25-18 win.
The teams kept things closer in the second set with a kill from Ley giving the Wildcats the 7-6 lead. The Mocs came back to tie things up, and the two teams would again find themselves tied at 10-10 after a kill from Brown. Brown and Sewell combined for a block to even the score 17-17 but the Mocs went on a 5-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. Despite three straight points by the 'Cats, they couldn't complete the comeback and fell 23-25 and dropped to 0-2 in the match.
Chattanooga once again took a slim lead in set three at 14-9, but a late rally by the 'Cats would tie things up at 17-17. Davidson finished things off with a 6-2 scoring run that included a trio of kills by Brown, giving the Wildcats the 25-21 win and cutting the match deficit to one at 1-2.
However, the Mocs would show a late dominance in set four that the Wildcats couldn't overcome. Davidson would cut the UTC lead to two at 15-13 on a kill from Chamberlin, but the Mocs would finish out the set on a 7-1 run to earn the 25-17 victory.
The Wildcats will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face Samford on Sunday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
