Field Hockey Set For Home Opener Saturday Against No. 16 Louisville

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson field hockey team is seeking a big win in their home opener as they take on No. 16 Louisville Saturday at 1 p.m. at Belk Turf Field.
LAST TIME OUT: Annie Evans scored twice in the second half, while Sarah Fisher made eight saves to blank Georgetown and give the Wildcats (1-0 a 2-0 season-opening win Friday, Aug. 26 at Georgetown's William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex. The Wildcats' scheduled game against LaSalle Saturday was canceled due to Hurricane Irene.
No. 16 Louisville (Big East) opened the season with a 3-1 loss to NorPac West member California, but rallied to beat no. 13 Michigan State, 2-1. They were picked to finish third in the Big East this season.
THE SERIES: Davidson is undefeated against Louisville after going 7-0-2 against the Cardinals from 1990 until their last meeting in 1998.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Davidson returns NorPac Player and Offensive Player of the Year Finley Amato, as well as all-conference defender Steph Meador. Annie Evans scored both of the 'Cats' goals against Georgetown. For Louisville, senior Hayley Turner was a unanimous selection to the All-Big East Preseason Team and has been named to the all-conference team in her first three seasons. Senior defender Caitlin Collins and junior goalkeeper Erin Conrad lead the Cardinal defense.
KENTUCKY CONNECTION: Davidson seniors Hannah English and Gray Robinson both hail from Louisville, Ky.
COACHES: Ginny Turner, honored last season as the 2010 NorPac Coach of the Year, begins her fifth season at the helm of the Wildcats after guiding the Wildcats to one of the most successful seasons in program history last season. Justine Sowry begins her first season Louisville's head coach after guiding UMass to three Atlantic 10 Championships and three NCAA appearances in four seasons at the hel. She was twice named the Dita/NFHCA Division I Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
HONORS: Sarah Fisher was named the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week after posting a season-opening shutout against Georgetown. She made eight saves, including five in the first half when Georgetown held the upper hand in offensive pressure. The weekly conference honor is the fourth of Fisher's career, as she was named the NorPac East Defensive player of the Week three times as a sophomore last season in her first season as a starter.
TOP 20: Davidson received votes in the 2011 Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Top 20 Poll, earning two points. The 'Cats were the lone NorPac East team to receive votes. Defending NorPac champion Stanford was ranked 20th, while California totaled 29 points.
Four of Davidson's non-conference opponents cracked the Top 20, while road-opponent VCU also received votes. Louisville was ranked 16th. Davidson will also travel to No. 17 Albany, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 11 Wake Forest this season.
