DAVIDSON, N.C. — Returning home for the first time since Mar. 30, the Wildcats used their home court to their advantage as they swept the doubles point on their way to a 4-3 triumph over visiting Wofford for their first Southern Conference win in women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Davidson snapped an 11-match skid in scoring their fifth win of the season to improve to 5-17 overall and 1-7 in SoCon play. Wofford fell to 10-13 overall and 2-7 vs. the league.
For the first time this March 25 vs. Appalachian State, the Wildcats opened up the match with a win in doubles play as they swept all three matches for the early 1-0 lead. The last time Davidson took all three doubles was Feb. 18 at home vs. USC Upstate.
The No. 1 team of Brites Moniz-Soares and Nisha Crouser, along with No. 2 team Alison Rauh and Stephani Synn took home 8-6 wins vs. the Terriers. It was both teams second wins together on the year.
Finishing off the sweep was Romina Clemente and Katharine Dicconson at No. 3 with an 8-3 win.
Davidson then carried that winning momentum into singles play and scored wins at No. 1, 2 and 4 positions to seal up the match and its first league win of the season.
Rauh and Synn both needed an extra set to finish off their opponents. Rauh fell in the first set, 6-3, but came back for 6-3 and 7-5 wins in the next two sets for her first win at the No. 1 spot on the year.
Synn, who returned to action last week after missing the middle half of the season, won her first set, 6-3, but fell 6-2 in set two to force a third set. She needed one extra game, but Synn got it done with a 7-5 win over Haley Baird at No. 2 to run her record to 4-8 and 2-0 in league matches.
Rounding out the last point for the 'Cats was Moniz-Soares with a straight set 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Julia Paulson. The freshman is a team-best 8-12 on the year.
Davidson has two more regular season matches left vs. UNCG (to be determined) and Furman (Apr. 16) before the SoCon Tournament, which takes place in Chattanooga this year.
