CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Trevis Simpson posted 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Davidson shot a season-low 24 percent from the field as UNCG posted a 71-64 victory over the Wildcats in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament in The McKenzie Arena Friday afternoon.
Brendan McKillop finished with 14 points to lead Davidson (17-14), and JP Kuhlman scored 11 points. De'Mon Brooks tallied nine points and 10 rebounds, and Nik Cochran had nine points and three assists.
Brandon Evans scored 12 points for the Spartans (7-23), and Kyle Randall had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Davidson picked a bad day to have an off shooting day. The 'Cats were 18-of-75 from the floor and 8-for-34 from 3-point range. Davidson did hit 20-of-25 free throws and had 28 offensive rebounds to stay in the contest.
UNCG, which led tip to horn, pushed an eight-point halftime cushion to 48-35 midway through the second half on a Brian Cole triple from the top of the key. Davidson used a 9-2 run, capped by a Tom Droney layup to trim the lead to 50-44 with 7:36 remaining.
But UNCG scored eight straight points, with six coming on three consecutive possessions, to push the margin to 14, its largest of the game. Davidson came within seven points three times in the last two minutes with the help of McKillop triples, but the Spartans made 7-of-8 free throws to seal the win.
UNCG got off to an 11-1 lead to start the game as the Spartans made four of their first five shots, and Davidson opened the game by missing its first seven from the field. The 'Cats scored nine in a row to make the score 11-10 six minutes into the contest, but UNCG used a 12-3 run to open a 23-13 advantage midway through the half.
Davidson trimmed the lead again to 24-22 after a pair of Kuhlman free throws with 7:22 left in the frame, but UNCG capped the half with an 8-2 run and led 32-24 at the break. The 'Cats got defensive stops on UNCG's first five possessions of the second stanza but could not convert on their end as they missed their first five field goal attempts.
