DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Wildcats gear up for a busy weekend as they will play back-to-back National Lacrosse Conference contests as they host Detroit and Howard on Friday and Sunday at Richardson Stadium.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (1-9, 0-2 NLC) is looking to get back on the winning track and score its first two NLC wins of the year. The Wildcats play Detroit (1-6, 0-2 NLC) on Friday at 6 p.m. and then close the weekend homestand with a 1 p.m. contest vs. Howard (3-7, 0-3 NLC) on Sunday.
The Bison will play at High Point on Friday night, before heading to Davidson for Sunday's contest.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
Friday's game vs. Detroit will be just the second in the all-time series between the two schools. Last year saw the 'Cats score a 15-12 win at home as five different players had multiple goals, led by Haley Cook's four scores.
Davidson is perfect against Howard at 7-0 since first playing the Bison in 1999. The 'Cats took a pair of contests last season, winning a 19-6 regular-season game and then opening the NLC Tournament with a first-round 20-3 win.
In the tournament game, Davidson scored four goals on their first five shot attempts in the first five minutes and rode that strong start to the easy victory.
Last Time Out...
... Davidson — Playing its second NLC road game of the season, Davidson hung tough against the Jacksonville Dolphins, but JU scored five of the first seven goals in the second half and held on for a 13-9 win last Sunday.
Ann Fucigna led the Wildcat attack with five points on three goals and a season-best two assists. The first-year player gave Davidson a 3-2 lead with her first goal, and then, brought the Wildcats to within two, 11-9, on her 22nd goal of the season and 6:52 left in the game.
For the first time this year, the Wildcats had the early momentum. The freshmen duo of Carlee Simon and Paige Logan scored back-to-back goals in the first two and half minutes for a 2-0 Wildcat lead. The defense did the rest, holding JU without a goal through the first 14 and a half minutes.
But JU went on a 6-2 run to finish out the half for a 6-4 lead. The Dolphins extended their lead to 11-6 later in the second half, before Davidson got to within two, 11-9, on a pair of goals from Alanna Parker and one by Fucigna. But the 'Cats went scoreless in the final six minutes to suffer the defeat.
... Detroit — The Titans were defeated by the Longwood Lancers last Sunday afternoon by the final score of 20-4. Corina Mahorn and Emily Boissonneault each scored two goals for the Titans.
Boissonneault now has 20 goals on the year, while Mahorn increased her total to 10.
Detroit trailed only 3-2 after a Bossonneault goal with 19:11 on the clock in first half, but Longwood answered with a 8-0 run for a commanding 11-2 lead after one period.
The second half was much like the first. The Lancers came out and scored the first four goals of the half to put the game away.
Marybeth Flanagan ended the game with seven saves in goal for the Titans.
... Howard — The Bison last played on Sunday, Mar. 27, at Liberty, suffering a 19-9 defeat on the road.
Courtland Lackey led the Bison in goals for the first time this season, tallying three on the day. Chastity Dailey and Taylor Tynes each posted two goals, as Desiree Cox and Cynithia Smalls added a score a piece for Howard.
After trailing 9-4 in the first half, the Bison fought back and brought the game to a competitive height, notching four straight goals in the opening of the second half to trail Liberty 9-8.
Defensively, Howard was able to control the Lady Flames, keeping them scoreless for 14 minutes, however Liberty responded with a 10-1 run that spread throughout the remainder of the game for the final score of 19-9.
