Davidson Falls Short in Bid For First NLC Win, 13-9

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Playing its second National Lacrosse Conference road game of the season, Davidson hung tough against the Jacksonville Dolphins, but JU scored five of the first seven goals in the second half and held on for a 13-9 win over the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse at D.B. Milne Field.
Davidson dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in league play, while Jacksonville ran its record to 7-4, 2-0 in NLC action.
Freshman Ann Fucigna led the Wildcat attack with five points on three goals and a season-best two assists. The first-year player gave Davidson a 3-2 lead with her first goal, and then, brought the Wildcats to within two, 11-9, on her 22nd goal of the season and 6:52 left in the game.
Lindsay Cooper had a season-high two goals and fellow sophomore Alanna Parker pushed her streak of at least one goal in a game to 18 with a pair of scores. She also led the 'Cats with four draw controls.
JU had four players with two or more goals, led by Sarah Michel's three. She also picked up one of the Dolphins' five assists on the afternoon.
For the first time this year, the Wildcats had the early momentum. The freshmen duo of Carlee Simon and Paige Logan scored back-to-back goals in the first two and half minutes for a 2-0 Wildcat lead. Simon's score was the first of her collegiate career.
Fucigna and Erin Doherty each earned assists on the goals, with Doherty tallying her team-leading ninth of the season.
The defense did the rest, holding JU without a goal through the first 14 and a half minutes. But, the Dolphins struck in the 15th and 14th minutes to knot things up at 2-all.
After Fucigna gave Davidson the lead back with 12:41 on the clock, Jacksonville started to pull away, getting the tying goal from Chelsea Watts at the 11:19 mark. JU then added three more goals, before Cooper netted a free-position goal with 10 seconds left in the first half to bring the score to 6-4.
Coming out of the break, the Dolphins added to their lead with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the new half.
Fucigna and Cooper cut the lead back to two, 8-6, with a goal each a little over minute apart, but JU scored the next three goals again to push the lead out to the 11-6 with 14:53 left in the contest.
Davidson tried one last push, when Simon set up Parker for a goal and then Parker added a free-position goal at the 9:10 mark to make it 11-8.
Fucigna got it to within two, 11-9, before Jacksonville held the 'Cats scoreless in the last 6:52 of the game and added a couple of insurance goal for the final of 13-9.
Stella Davis and goalie Jessica Melby tied for the team-lead in groundballs with three each as Davidson held a 14-13 edge in groundballs. Davis also forced a career-best three turnovers on the afternoon.
Melby was credited with six saves in goal, while JU's Karlin Tobin had two. Davidson as a team got off 16 shots to Jacksonville's 26.
The Wildcats will have back-to-back home NLC games this week coming up. They will first play host to Detroit on Friday, Apr. 1 at 6 p.m. and then take on Howard on Sunday at 1 p.m.
