DAVIDSON, N.C. — After grabbing an early 1-0 lead after doubles play, Davidson could not carry its momentum into singles play as the Wildcats dropped five of the six matches in falling to visiting Appalachian State, 5-2, on Friday afternoon in Southern Conference women's tennis action at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson (4-12, 0-3 SoCon) fell for just the third time since 1978 to the Mountaineers (7-6, 1-3 SoCon) as it holds a 23-3 record in the all-time series. The 'Cats, who had won the last nine meetings vs. ASU, have dropped their last six straight matches overall, four of them at home.
The afternoon started out strong for the Wildcats as they scored doubles wins at No. 1 and 2 positions by the score of 8-6 in both matches. The duo of Nisha Crouser (Columbus, Ohio) and Brites Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) earned their first win together as a pair, while Elise Held (Butler, Pa.) and Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) scored their first win as well.
ASU then grabbed a 2-1 lead after picking singles wins at No. 1 and 4, but Davidson came back to get a victory at No. 6 when Frizzi Bschorer (Barnin, Germany) picked up a two-set win, 6-3, 7-6. The freshman earned her second collegiate win and first-ever in SoCon play.
Two of the final three singles matches went to a third set, but the Wildcats were unable to prevail in either of them as ASU picked up the final three points. Crouser came back from dropping her first set (6-0) to earn a 6-3 win in set two. She forced an extra game in the last set, but fell 7-5.
Held looked strong in her first set, scoring a 6-4 win, but dropped the last two sets, 6-2, 6-3. It was just her third collegiate match of the season.
Continuing a four-match homestand, Davidson will host College of Charleston in another SoCon match tomorrow at 10 a.m.
