Martin Finishes 47th Best in 50 Free at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, TEXAS — In her second straight NCAA appearance, senior Lindsey Martin finished 47th in the nation in the 50 freestyle as competition opened at the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday morning at the Lee and Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas.
The 2011 CCSA Swimmer of the Meet and three-time league champion in the event, Martin finished sixth in her heat with a time of 22.89, but missed making it back to the evening session. She swam out of heat five, along with Texas A&M's Liliana Ibanez (22.71), Purdue's Ariel Martin (23.06), California's Hannah Wilson (22.33), Arizona's Kaitlin Flederbach (22.52), UCLA's Cynthia Fascella (22.69), LSU's Samantha Goates (23.16) and Penn State's Paige Whitmire (22.74). There were eight heats of the event, which required a time of 22.33 to final.
Margo Geer (Arizona, 21.79), Arian Vanderpool-Wallace (Auburn, 21.91), Liv Jensen (Cal Berkeley, 21.98), Jane Trepp (Louisiana, 21.99), Lauren Perdue (Virginia, 22.01), Kasey Carlson (Southern, 22.15), Betsy Webb (Stanford, 22.15), Sarah Bateman (Florida, 22.16) and Shara Stafford (Florida, 22.72) swam the eight best times. Carlson, Webb, Bateman and Stafford will compete in a swim off.
Sam Woodward (Stanford, 22.17), Bethany Adams (Texas, 22.18), Amanda Kendall (Louisiana, 22.20), Kate Dwelley (Stanford, 22.20), Becky Thompson (Wisconsin, 22.27), Rebecca Kane (UNC, 22.32), Wilson (Cal Berkeley, 22.33), Natasha Moodie (Michigan, 22.33) and Megan Detro (Ohio State, 22.33) also finished inside the top 16. Kendall, Dwelley, Wilson, Moodie and Detro will compete in a swim off. Finals will be contested at 8 p.m. EST.
Martin returns to action in the 100 freestyle Saturday, having elected not to swim in tomorrow's 200 freestyle. Prelims again at noon and finals at 8 p.m.
