Interview with Lindsey Martin: 2011 NCAA Preview
AUSTIN, TEXAS — For a second straight season, senior Lindsey Martin will represent the Davidson swimming and diving team as competition opens at the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships tomorrow at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas.
Martin, who became the first Davidson swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships with three swims at the 2010 NCAAs at Purdue University, will begin her competition with the 50 freestyle preliminaries at 12 p.m. (EST) tomorrow morning. Finals will be contested at 8 p.m. She will also compete in the 100 freestyle on Saturday, with prelims at 12 p.m. and finals at 8 p.m.
In an impressive career, Martin enters her final weekend of collegiate competition as Davidson's record holder in the 50 (:22.57), 100 (:48.95) and 200 (1:48.76) freestyles and is a member of all five school-record holding women's relay teams.
Martin was invited to the 2011 Championships based on her relay split (100 freestyle) time of 48.95 — also a conference and school record — in the 400 freestyle relay at the league championships, where she was also named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Meet for a second straight season. She was a part of two winning relays and won individual titles in both the 50 and 100 freestyles at the 2011 CCSA Championships. She also swam three individual NCAA B-cut times — the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, and contributed to an NCAA B-cut time in the 400 free relay. Martin also earned 2010 CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Year honors after being named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week five times.
In Davidson's first ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, Martin finished 30th in the 50 free last season with a time of 22.75 in the preliminary session on the first day of competition last year at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center. She broke her own college record in the 200 freestyle on day two, finishing 55th in the prelim with a Davidson and personal-best time of 1:48.76. She concluded her competition by swimming another personal and Davidson-record time in the 100 freestyle, finishing 28th in 49.55.
