DAVIDSON, N.C. — A year after making Davidson swimming and diving history, senior Lindsey Martin will get one final chance to cement her legacy, after receiving an invitation to the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships for a second straight season. The 2011 NCAA Championships will be held on March 17-19 in Austin, Texas, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Martin, who picked up her second straight CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Meet in Athens two weekends ago, was invited to the 2011 Championships based on her time of relay split of 48.95 — a conference and school record — in the 400 freestyle relay at the league championships. Like in 2010, she will also compete in the 50 and 200 freestyles, additional events she swam B-cut times in this season.
"It is impossible to overstate the impact that Lindsey has had on her teammates and our program," head coach John Young said. "Swimming at this year's NCAA Championships will be the well-deserved capstone of a tremendous college career. I'm excited to see her, again, represent Davidson at the most competitive meet in the world."
Martin was a part of two winning relays and won individual titles in both the 50 and 100 freestyles at the 2011 CCSA Championships. She swam three individual NCAA B-cut times — the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, and contributed to one NCAA B-cut relay time, the 400 free relay, to earn Swimmer of the Meet honors.
In Davidson's first ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships, Martin finished 30th in the 50 free with a time of 22.75 in the preliminary session on the first day of competition last year at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center. She broke her own college record in the 200 freestyle on the second day of competition, finishing 55th in the prelim with a Davidson and personal-best time of 1:48.76. She concluded her competition at the 2010 Championships by swimming another personal and Davidson record time in the 100 freestyle, finishing 28th in her final race of the competition with a personal and college record time of 49.55.
