CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Looking to close out its 2011 road schedule on a positive note, freshman Julia Singley (Morganton, N.C.) made sure that happened for the Davidson women's soccer team when she kicked in her second game-winning goal of the season in the seventh minute of overtime to give the Wildcats a 2-1 victory at?Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon.
Singley worked around the defense on the left side of the field and then fired off a shot from the middle that send Davidson (8-8-2, 6-4 SoCon) to its second overtime win of the year. The 'Cats have played in five overtimes overall, going 2-1-2. They also finished 3-4 on the road this season.
Davidson kept its hold on fourth place in the Southern Conference standings, meaning the Wildcats are still in position to host a first round game in the SoCon Tournament on Oct. 30.
For the freshman Singley, it was her fouth goal of the season, but first since netting one back on Sept. 2 at home vs. East Carolina. She opened the year with a pair of goals vs. UNC Asheville and received the league's player of the week honor for her efforts.
Davidson, which outshot Chattanooga (6-9-2, 1-8-1 SoCon) 25-14, jumped on the Mocs quickly. The duo of Stephanie Piperno (Harwinton, Conn.) and Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.) hooked up three minutes into the start of the game to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. Piperno sent a pass to Newmister in the box where the junior turned and ripped a shot from about eight yards out to the left post for her third goal of the season.
Newmister is tied for third on the squad with seven points, while Piperno earned her third assist of the year to push her points total to 13.
Chattanooga would strike just before halftime at the 44:32 mark when the Mocs got a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Becca Smith converted on the free kick, scoring her 15th goal of the year to knot things up at 1-apiece heading into the break.
The second half saw the Wildcats fire off 14 shots, but were not able to capitalize on any of them and both teams headed to overtime where Singley finished things off at the 96:39 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Locke (Carlsbad, Calif.) moved to 7-5-1 on the year as she came up with six saves. The Mocs' Taylor Mangrum stopped 13 of the Wildcats' 25 shots.
The Wildcats close out their regular season with a 7 p.m. midweek contest at home against Georgia Southern on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
