FARMVILLE, Va. – Finley Amato put Davidson ahead with eight minutes remaining, but Longwood scored twice late to take a 3-2 win over the Wildcats in NorPac field hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Longwood University Athletics Complex.
Olga Knop scored the game-winning goal for Longwood (10-8, 4-1 NorPac) in the 68th minute off a penalty corner, with Sarah Bietsch and Rachel Akers earning the assists.
"We knew this would be an intense game and it was a great 70 minutes of hockey," said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. "After scoring our second goal to go ahead we made some mental mistakes which allowed Longwood back in the game."
Amato had found a loose ball from in front of the net from junior Annie Evans in the 62nd minute to put Davidson (8-7, 2-2 NorPac) ahead 2-1, but Stacey de Grandhomme tied the game at 2-2 with a shot from the top of the circle less than two minutes later.
Senior Meg Jarrell gave Davidson a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. senior Hannah English passed the ball along the end line to Jarrell in front for the goal. The assist was Amato's 14th of her career, ranking her third all-time in the category at Davidson.
Christina Verhulst answered for Longwood in the 12th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Lauren Sullivan sent a long pass from outside the circle to Verhulst, who was able to find the back of the cage.
The game would remain scoreless for the next 50 minutes. Davidson junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made seven saves over the last 23 minutes of the first half to keep the game knotted at 1-1 heading into halftime. She finished with 10 saves for the game.
"Fisher made some excellent saves, which kept us in the game," said Turner. "Longwood took some great shots, including a drag flick that she had an awesome touch on.
"At halftime we talked about fixing some things and making better decisions and I was very glad to see that we immediately made those changes work on the field. Longwood put up a great fight today."
Longwood goalkeeper and reigning NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week Kaye Goulding made three saves.
Knop led the Lancers with seven of their 19 shots. Amato led the Davidson with three of the 'Cats' eight shots.
"Despite working as hard as we did today, this is a disappointing NorPac loss," added Turner. "We need a strong finish this last week before the tournament."
Davidson will return to Belk Turf Field for their final two games of the regular season. Both will be crucial NorPac contests, as they will host Appalachian State Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and celebrate Senior Day before hosting Radford Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
