Wofford Faces Men's Soccer Saturday Night in SoCon Match
10/21/2011 12:16:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team will begin a series of four-consecutive home Southern Conference matches Saturday at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium against Wofford.
COVERAGE PROMOTIONS: The first 250 fans will receive Wildcats ThunderStix. It is also youth soccer night, so all kids that wear their soccer jerseys get in free with a paying adult.
LAST TIME OUT: Jake Keator's strike from 25 yards out in the 82nd minute was the difference as Davidson scored a 1-0 upset victory over No. 2 North Carolina in non-conference men's soccer action Monday night. Goalkeeper Chip Sanders made seven saves for his career-high seventh shutout of the season.
UPSET OF THE YEAR: TopDrawerSoccer.com wrote: “Davidson & Goliath: Davidson, North Carolina, may not carry the same kind of athletic clout as, say, Chapel Hill, but for one night it was the center of the college soccer universe. Davidson pulled off an eye-opening 1-0 victory over No. 2 North Carolina on Monday in the upset heard round the country. The Tar Heels thoroughly controlled the game, outshooting the Wildcats 16-3, but couldn't convert any of their chances. Davidson did convert, getting a 25-yard strike from Jake Keator in the 81st minute on a shot that ensured his place in Davidson soccer lore.”
SHOCK THE NATION: Davidson earned its first win over a Top-10 team since 2009 when the Wildcats earned a convincing 4-1 win over then-No. 6 Duke at Alumni Stadium. Davidson also defeated No. 25 South Carolina earlier in 2009.
THE SERIES VS. NORTH CAROLINA: The Davidson-UNC series is one of the oldest in Wildcats men's soccer history, dating back to the 'Cats inaugural season in 1956. The two teams had not met in the regular season since 2003, as Davidson suffered a 1-0 defeat at home. The Wildcats were the first team to defeat North Carolina after their 2001 National Championship, as early in the 2002 season, the 'Cats took a 1-0 win in Chapel Hill. Head coach Matt Spear is now 2-1 all-time against the Tar Heels.
DID YOU SEE THAT?: Jake Keator's game-winning goal garnered national attention as the YouTube video was embedded on several national soccer publications and was aired on ESPN2's SportsNation. As of Friday morning, the video had garnered 14,502 views in three days on YouTube. It is by far the most-watched video on the Davidson YouTube channel (youtube.com/davidsonathletics) as men's basketball's double overtime win over Elon in 2009 has garnered just under 4,000 views in about a year and a half. The video has a long way to go to reach the Clemson-Davidson baseball rain delay video hosted by Clemson. That video has over 714,000 views.
RECORD CROWD: An Alumni Stadium record crowd of 1,914 witnessed the win over No. 2 UNC. The previous record was 1,714, set Oct. 24, 2009 against Wofford.
SCOUTING WOFFORD: The Terriers have struggled in conference play this season, dropping all four of their matches so far, including three at home. College of Charleston (5-1), Elon (2-0), and UNCG (4-0) earned wins in Spartanburg, while the Terriers suffered a 4-2 setback at Georgia Southern. Wofford faired well against North Carolina earlier in the season, suffering just a 1-0 defeat (Sept. 20). Wofford's most recent outing was a 2-1 setback against No. 19 Coastal Carolina. Alex Hutchins leads the team in scoring with five goals and an assist to rank ninth in the conference with 11 points. All four Terrier goalkeepers have seen action this season, with Andrew Drennan seeing the most time. Drennan has a 2.07 goals against average and .688 save percentage.
LAST MEETING: SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 8, 2010) – The Davidson offense came to life in the second half, scoring three goals on 11 shots to defeat Wofford, 3-0 at Snyder Field. Mark Millard scored the first and third goals for Davidson, while Allen Page headed in the Wildcats' second goal. The game was aired live on Fox Soccer Channel as a part of the NSCAA Game of the Week series.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: The Davidson men's soccer team will be raising awareness for breast cancer during their Senior Night game Saturday, Oct. 29 against Appalachian State. The inaugural Kick Cancer event will offer t-shirts for sale on at all remaining men's soccer home contests. T-shirts may be purchased for $15 each. Proceeds from the sale of men's soccer t-shirts will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The inaugural Kick Cancer event was spawned by two of Davidson's tri-captains, Brian McGue and Greg Macnamara, as a show of support for fellow captain Chip Sanders, whose mother, Nicki, is currently fighting breast cancer.
MOVING UP: Senior GK Chip Sanders moved into third all-time at Davidson in career shutouts with his career-high seventh shutout of the season against No. 2 North Carolina, giving him 15 total. Alex Deegan (1991-95) and Soren Johnson (1999-02) are the record holders with 20 career shutouts.
BLANKED: The 'Cats picked up their seventh shutout of the season against No. 2 North Carolina. They had six shutouts all of last season. Davidson did not allow a goal in the first two games of the season after opening with a 2-0 win at Air Force and following with a 0-0 draw at No. 19 Denver. The last time the Wildcats opened the season with back-to-back shutouts was in 1999.
WELL TRAVELED: Prior to their match against Longwood, Davidson concluded a stretch of matches in which six of seven were on the road. Davidson went 1-3 in four games on the road in between the home Winthrop and Duke matches. The road trip started at No. 25 ETSU, where a deflection late gave ETSU a 3-2 win. The 'Cats won at Campbell and appeared on their way to victory at Georgia Southern, but lightning erased their 1-0 lead and forced a makeup game the next day. Davidson dropped the makeup contest and then lost at Wake Forest playing what was nearly their third game in four days. The 'Cats scored a double overtime victory at Elon Oct. 8 and played to a scoreless draw at UNCG.
PARK THE BUS: The 'Cats are hoping the next time they need to board a bus, it will be heading to Boone, N.C. Davidson's final six regular season games are all at home, including four conference games. If the 'Cats finish in the top half of the league standings, they will be a home team in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament. Appalachian State is hosting the SoCon semifinals and finals.
BALANCED ATTACK: Nine different players have scored Davidson's 18 goals this season, while 14 have tallied at least one point (goal or assist).
CAREER YEAR: Davidson scoring leader Brian McGue leads the team with a career-high three goals and three assists for nine points, surpassing his total of five last season. The total ranks him 10th in the Southern Conference.
UNDERCLASSMEN STRIKE: All three goals in Davidson's 3-2 win over Elon were scored by underclassmen. Sophomore Jake Keator scored the first goal, while sophomore Chris Pettiglio notched the game-winner in overtime. The second goal of the game was scored by freshman Max Riehemann, who is tied for the team lead in goals with three.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Davidson has played in three overtime games this season: a 0-0 draw at Denver in the second game of the season, a 3-2 double OT win over Elon and a 0-0 draw at UNCG. After having not one tie in 2009, Davidson had six in 2010, going 1-0-6 in seven overtime games, including two that were scoreless. The 'Cats have not lost an overtime game since 2009 (Oct. 10 at Elon, 1-2), and are 4-1-8 in overtime the past three seasons.
LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Davidson senior defender and tri-captain Greg Macnamara was one of 30 NCAA men's soccer student-athletes named as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
LIGHTNING STRIKES THRICE: The opening weekend thunderstorms, which affected sporting events all across the country, impacted both the Davidson men's and women's soccer games on Sept. 2. The men's team dealt with a 90-minute delay at halftime at Air Force, while the women's team saw their kickoff get delayed an hour and 45 minutes. On Sept. 21 at Campbell, play was stopped one hour, 47 minutes due to lightning, and the 'Cats went on to win 1-0. At Georgia Southern, the game was originally scheduled to begin Sunday at 2 p.m. but multiple lightning delays ultimately forced the game to be postponed until Monday at 3 p.m. The teams managed to get 67 minutes of play in Sunday with Davidson holding a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Garrett Bostwick, but since the game did not reach the 70-minute mark, none of the stats counted as per NCAA rules, and the game was restarted at 0-0 Monday at 3 p.m. Georgia Southern scored three times in the first half en route to a 3-2 win. A delay of 1:47 halted action with just under five minutes remaining in the Monday game, resulting in a game that lasted 3:46.
