DAVIDSON, N.C. – Tyler McFayden scored the game-winning goal for Davidson and Christine Rua added two second-half goals in a convincing 3-0 victory over Liberty Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Davidson (8-6, 2-1 NorPac) controlled possession throughout the game and did not yield a Liberty (5-8) shot or penalty corner during regular game play.
“We fixed a lot of things we had been working on and really improved from our last couple games,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “We also stepped up defensively and did a great job not allowing any corners.”
McFayden scored in the 22nd minute, finding a loose ball in the circle and ripping it just inside the left post.
Rua then added a pair of goals in a 22 second span. Her first came at 36:58, finding a loose ball in front after a shot by junior Finley Amato was blocked. Her second goal came at 37:20, blasting a shot from the left for the final 3-0 margin.
Davidson totaled 19 shots for the game, led by Amato's six. Ann Jefferis, a transfer from Richmond, made eight saves, while Helen Doolittle made a defensive save in the 59th minute to deny junior Annie Evans.
“We did a great job generating attacking opportunities,” said Turner. “Jefferis played really well for them in the cage and made it difficult for us to score.”
Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher went untested in the first 55:01 of the game, and was relieved by sophomore Carolyn Macek for the remainder. Macek faced a difficult test when Liberty was awarded a penalty stroke at 64:35 after junior Madison Parrish reentered the game too early following a yellow card. Doolittle took the attempt for Liberty, but Macek made the save.
“This win was a good step for us going into our final NorPac games and the conference tournament,” said Turner.
The 'Cats have just three regular season games remaining, the final two of which are at home. Davidson next plays at Longwood Saturday at 2 p.m. The regular season will conclude the following week after hosting Appalachian State on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. and Radford on Senior Day Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
Notes: The multi-goal game was the second of Rua's career … Liberty is in its first season of field hockey … the Flames will join the NorPac Field Hockey Conference in 2012 as the league's ninth member and the East Division's fifth member.
