MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — Freshman forward Becca Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) brought the Wildcats back from a 2-0 deficit with a goal and an assist, but Davidson's comeback efforts fell short as College of Charleston scored the game-winner shortly after the 'Cats tied it up to earn a 3-2 win in a matchup of third place teams in the Southern Conference standings on Thursday evening in women's soccer action at the Patriots Point Soccer Complex.
Tied with the Cougars at 4-2 in the league standings coming into the night, Davidson (6-7-2) dropped a game back of the Cougars, who improved to 9-6 in their final home game of the season. They finished 7-2 on their home field.
Trailing 2-0 after a half of play, the Wildcats got the second half under way in impressive scoring fashion, starting with a strike from Stephanie Piperno (Harwinton, Conn.) to cut the lead in half in the 50th minute. Fellow classmate Fisher set the goal up with a pass to the racing Piperno on the far side of the field. The freshman gathered in the pass, dribbled to the far corner of the box, made a nice cutback move and put a shot to the near post as CofC's goalkeeper Cricket Wise was caught off guard.
Piperno's goal was her fourth of the season, second-best on the team, while Fisher tallied her second assist of the year.
After Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.) nearly tied the game up with a shot off the cross bar in the 56th minute, Fisher came through much like she has done all season and knotted things up at 2-all at the 60:32 mark with the equalizer. The first-year forward ripped a shot from about 20 yards out and went top shelf for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Sophie Newsom (Atlanta, Ga.) helped set up the goal, earning her first career assist and seventh point of the season.
But, the scoring was not done as the Cougars countered with a quick strike of their own less than a minute later to regain the lead and eventually the 3-2 win. Sarah Schaidle and Hope Atkinson hooked up for the second time in the game with Schaidle netting her team-best seventh goal off a pass from Atkinson in the box.
Davidson never stopped pressing, coming close twice over the next 12 minutes in tying things up again. Fisher had a header in the six-yard box off a corner that was saved, and then in the 74th minute, Elizabeth Underwood (Atlanta, Ga.) took a shot from the near side that just grazed over the cross bar.
Locke made some great stops, especially late in second half in trying to keep things close for the Wildcats. One of those big saves came in at 71:42 mark when she halted a one-on-one chance by Schaidle by blocking the shot with her foot.
Davidson, which had the momentum to start the game, found itself down 1-0 when CofC got the scoring started in the 19th minute off a Atkinson shot to the far post. Atkinson had slipped in between the Wildcat defense just outside the 18-yard box. She then tracked down a touch pass from her teammate Alli Brashear, who got a pass from Schaidle to start the scoring rally, and put the ball in.
The Cougars' lead grew to 2-0 seven minutes later when a loose ball, that was first saved by goalkeeper Rachel Locke (Carlsbad, Calif.) off a shot and then bounced around, came to rest at the feet of McCallie Jones, who chipped it to the far post for the goal.
Underwood nearly got the 'Cats on the board when she fired a shot off the cross bar from about 36 yards out in the 39th minute.
The Wildcats return home for a single game this weekend when they host The Citadel on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the 'Cats will honor their six seniors as part of Senior Day.
