STATESBORO, Ga. -
JP Kuhlman scored 20 points, and De'Mon Brooks added 14 points and five rebounds to lead Davidson to a 73-66 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over Georgia Southern in Hanner Fieldhouse Monday night.

Brendan McKillop also scored 11 for the Wildcats (10-12, 4-7 SoCon), and Tom Droney netted eight.

Jelani Hewitt and Ben Drayton scored 14 points each to lead Georgia Southern (4-19, 0-10 SoCon), and Tre Bussey added 11.

Davidson shot 54 percent from the field and made 7-of-15 from behind the arc on the game. The 'Cats held Georgia Southern to 40 percent from the floor in the first half.

The Wildcats led by nine points at halftime and pushed the margin to 11 early in the second frame, but an 8-2 Georgia Southern spurt, capped by a Hewitt triple, trimmed the lead to 48-45 midway through the period.

McKillop knocked down a big 3-pointer from the wing to give the Wildcats some breathing room, and Kuhlman's two free throws made the advantage 54-45 with 6:52 to play.

After Georgia Southern trimmed the cushion to six points, Jake Cohen hit a big turnaround jumper in the lane to open an 8-3 Davidson run. Kuhlman's two free throws made the score 64-53 withy 1:50 remaining.

The Eagles would not go quietly and forced the Wildcats to make free throws inside the last minute. Kuhlman obliged, knocking down all six of his attempts. After Bussey's two free throws trimmed the lead to five points with 12 seconds left, giving the Eagles a glimmer of hope, Droney made two from the charity stripe to seal the win.

Davidson capped the first half with an 8-3 flurry, sparked by triples from Droney and Chris Czerapowicz, to take a 35-26 lead at the break. McKillop capped the run with a layup with one second left on the clock.

The Wildcats have yet another short turnaround as they travel to Samford for a 7 p.m. (CT) Southern Conference game Thursday.

Game Notes: Brooks' point total was one off his career high… Bob McKillop needs seven wins to reach 400… Brendan McKillop needs six triples to move into the career top-5 at Davidson.
