DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team will play its third game in five days at Alumni Stadium Tuesday night, as the Wildcats will host Campbell in a non-conference match set to start at 7 p.m.
Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson enters the match at 1-0-1 after defeating Marist, 6-1 Friday night and tying Bowling Green, 2-2 Sunday afternoon to take the Davidson adidas Classic title. Yannick Pilgrim led the 'Cats offensively with a pair of goals and an assist in the Marist rout, and an assist on Alex Caskey's goal against Bowling Green. Fellow starting forward Mark Millard also scored twice and assisted on a Pilgrim goal in the Marist match. Caskey shined against Bowling Green, scoring his first goal of the season and taking five shots. Caskey, Davidson's top playmaker, made an impact at both ends of the field, stealing the ball from opposing attackers starting Davidson's attack. Greg Macnamara was solid on defense, earning all-tournament honors along with Pilgrim, Caskey and Millard.
Scouting the Camels: The defending Atlantic Sun regular season champion Campbell Camels have yet to earn a decision in 2010 (0-0-2), playing to a scoreless draw against Loyola (Md.) and a 1-1 draw at Richmond. Newcomer Jared Girard scored the Camels' lone goal. Mitchell Cardenas, Campbell's second-leading scorer, in 2009, assisted on the tally. Ryan Amons has made nine saves as goalkeeper. Head coach Steve Armas is in his first season after serving as an assistant for four years. Campbell was picked to finish second in the A-Sun in 2010 with just six starters returning.
The Series: Davidson is 5-5 all-time against Campbell. The Wildcats took a convincing 5-2 win at Campbell in the 2009 season finale. Playing in his final collegiate game, senior Charlie Reiter scored a career-best three goals and one assist. The five-goal effort was Davidson's first since 2004 when the 'Cats defeated Vanderbilt, 5-2.
Up Next: Davidson's next three games will be on the road: at No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (Sept. 10), at No. 5 UCLA (Sept. 12) and at Gardner-Webb (Sept. 18). The Wildcats are 1-2 against UCLA and will be meeting UC Santa Barbara for the first time. Davidson went 2-1 against nationally-ranked teams, defeating No. 25 South Carolina and No. 6 Duke by 4-1 scores before falling to No. 2 Wake Forest by the same score.
