DAVIDSON, N.C. – A strong defensive effort and a goal by senior midfielder Alex Caskey gave the Davidson Wildcats a 1-0 victory over Campbell in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday night in Alumni Stadium.
Caskey put the Wildcats (2-0-1) on the board just before the end of the first half. Senior forward Yannick Pilgrim (Arima Trinidad & Tobago) crossed the ball into the six-yard box where senior midfielder Peter Shelton (Raleigh, N.C.) put the ball on goal. Campbell (0-1-2) goalkeeper Ryan Amons made the save, but Caskey found the ball amidst the Campbell defenders and put it in for the score.
Junior goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.) needed to make just two saves to earn his first shutout of the season and the third of his career. Sanders worked well with his defenders in front, intercepting several crosses. The starting backline of freshman Ryan Malden (Agoura Hills, Calif.), junior Hunter Hayes (Peachtree City, Ga.), junior Dennis Shannon (Denver, Colo.) and junior Allen Page (Columbus, Ga.) held the Camels to just seven shot attempts.
Davidson took 13 shots, forcing Amons to make eight saves.
The Wildcats will take to the air and head to the West Coast for a pair of matches against top-25 teams. Davidson takes on No. 21 UC Santa Barbara Friday at 7 p.m. PT and No. 17 UCLA at 3:00 p.m. PT.
