DAVIDSON, N.C. - Alex Caskey and George Ramsay both tallied goals for Davidson, but Bowling Green was able to match their production and battle to a 2-2 draw in the third game of the Davidson adidas Classic Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. Appalachian State (1-0-1) defeated Marist 3-1 in the tournament's final match Sunday evening, giving Davidson (1-0-1) the tournament title based on goal differential.
Caskey, senior forward Yannick Pilgrim, junior forward Mark Millard and junior defender Greg Macnamara were all named to the all-tournament team. Pilgrim was dubbed the Most Valuable Player.
Caskey's goal came just before the conclusion of the first half on a feed from Pilgrim. Pilgrim sent a pass from the midfield to Caskey in between a couple of defenders, and Caskey sent a hard shot into the back of the net from just inside the 18-yard box.
"Alex' goal was 1st class," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Yannick fed him an excellent pass, and Alex made the 1st touch, dribble, and shot look so graceful."
Bowling Green battled back and evened the match 4:45 into the second half as Zach Schwee was able to convert a corner kick.
Ramsay put the 'Cats back on top at 62:36 after intercepting a Bowling Green clearing attempt. Junior Mark Millard (Oak Ridge, N.C.) crossed the ball in front of the net with the goalkeeper out of position, but a Bowling Green defender was there to disrupt the play. The defender cleared the ball out ot Ramsay though, and he arced a soft shot into the goal.
"George showed great composure and touch on his goal," said Spear. "The tendency is to rush that kind of opportunity, or go for power rather than finesse."
A long goal from Max Weston evened the game though with less than 10 minutes remaining. Both teams had opportunites in overtime, but were unable to convert.
"It was a hard fought game, and we definitely can learn early in our season from its intensity," said Spear. "I give a ton of credit to Bowling Green. They came back twice from a goal down, and they battled to the final whistle. That shows a lot of character, and that is in line with a Eric Nichols' squad."
Davidson returns to action Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium, hosting Campbell at 7 p.m.
