DAVIDSON, N.C. — Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) led the Davidson women's tennis team at the College of Charleston Invitational when she finished fifth in the B1 Singles bracket this past weekend.
Galainena was one of eight Wildcats to take part in the CofC Invitational, with freshman Tamara Hill (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Nisha Crouser (Columbus, Ohio) also having a solid weekend.
Galainena started her weekend off with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-1 win over a player from Samford. In the second round, the senior dropped a two-setter to Kelly Kambourelis of CofC, but regrouped for a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over a Charlotte player to reach the fifth and sixth-place bracket. She then closed out her successful weekend with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kourtney Kowal of Coastal Carolina to grab fifth place in the B1 Singles bracket.
Hill, in her first away fall tournament, started off her singles run with a lose in the B2 bracket, but ran the table on the consolation side. The freshman took home a 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 in her first consolation match and then captured a 6-2, 6-1 victory to reach the finals. Hill gave up just four games in a two-set, 6-1, 6-4, win over Susita Das of CSU to take home the consolation bracket title.
Fellow freshman Crouser, who led Davidson with 10 points at its own tournament a few weeks ago, had a nice weekend in the A2 Singles bracket. She won her opening-round match, 6-0 7-5, before dropping her next match in the second round. Crouser then took home seventh place with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Natalie Collins of East Carolina.
Joining Crouser in the A2 Singles bracket was Elise Held (Butler, Pa.), who dropped her first two matches of the weekend, but came back to earn a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Iveta Guneva of Charlotte in one of her consolation matches.
Frizzi Bschorer (Barnin, Germany) and Catherine Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) competed in the B1 Singles and B2 Singles brackets over the weekend. Bschorer fell in both of her matches, while Wood came back after dropping her first two matches to earn a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep in her second to final match of the weekend.
Rounding out the singles players for the Wildcats was senior Allison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and sophomore Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.), who each competed in the A1 Singles bracket. Rauh earned a 0-6, 6-3, 10-8 win a consolation match, while Synn also took home a win in a consolation match.
Davidson had four doubles teams that participated in the four brackets. The duo of Rauh and Held, and Hill Bschorer each picked up a win over the weekend.
The 'Cats are off until heading to the Virginia Tech Invitational, Oct. 1-3.
