Wildcats Compete at Hokie Fall Invite This Past Weekend

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Nine Wildcats represented the Davidson women's tennis team this past weekend at the Virginia Tech Hokie Fall Invite, with three Wildcats finishing sixth or better in their singles bracket.
Freshman Brites Moniz-Soares led the charge in singles play as she won the Flight G bracket. The first-year player opened the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 win and then rattled off another straight set, 6-2, 6-2, win to reach the finals. She finished off her weekend with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Jessie Boda of LU.
Junior Stephani Synn finished fourth in the Flight A bracket with a solid run through the weekend. She started with a pair of wins to reach the semifinals, including a three-setter, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Synn fell 7-6, 6-2 to move to the third-and fourth-place bracket, before falling in her final match of the weekend to earn fourth place.
Playing in the Flight E bracket was Frizzi Bschorer and she scored a sixth-place finish. The freshman opened with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Sara Tegner of Radford, but dropped her second round match. She moved onto the fifth and sixth-place match by taking home a 6-4, 7-5 win over Giulia Andreazza of ETSU, before ending her weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 setback for sixth place.
Sophomore Catherine Wood came back strong after dropping her first round match to win the Flight F Singles consolation bracket. She reached the consolation finals with a 6-3, 6-3 win and then captured the consolation title with a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 tiebreaker win in the finals.
In the Flight C bracket, Nisha Crouser reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-3 win over a player from host Virginia Tech, before seeing her weekend end there with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat.
The Wildcats had four doubles teams also competing over the weekend. The team of Bschorer/Moniz-Soares finished sixth overall in the Flight C doubles. The pair opened with an 8-3 win, but lost a close 8-6 decision to UR, before scoring an 8-3 win over a team from UNC Wilmington for sixth.
Crouser and Synn also had a nice weekend. They played in the Flight A doubles, going 2-1, including an 8-6 win over UMBC in their final match.
The 'Cats take a few weeks off before hosting their second Fall Invitational, the Davidson Fall Classic, Oct. 15-16 at the Covington Tennis Courts.
