DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team fell short in its bid to close out its eight-match homestand on a winning note, falling 7-0 to Brown on Monday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson finished 5-3 in its span of home games as it fell to 9-5 overall. Brown ran its record to 10-8 and have taken two of the last three meeting with the Wildcats.
Brown started the match off by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. Joe Schafer and Eric Noble did capture a win at No. 1 with an 8-6 triumph, their eighth win of the season.
The Wildcats battled in all six of their singles matches, but were not able to find the victory column as the Bears took all six matches.
The freshmen duo of Schafer and Chris Mark each forced three setters. Schafer tied things up at one set apiece after taking a 6-4 decision in the second set. Skate Gorham though, took the third set 6-4 at No. 1, dropping Schafer to 8-4 on the year.
Mark took the first set vs. Kendrick Au at No. 3, but then fell 6-4, 6-3 in the next two sets. The freshman has hit a bit of a skid late, dropping his last three matches after rattling off five straight wins prior.
Seeing his team- and career-best 10-match win streak come to an end was Calum Gee. The sophomore dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4, his first defeat since a two-set setback at Clemson to open the season, Jan. 16.
Sam Burns also suffered a defeat for the first time in six matches as he fell to Tim Klanke, 6-2, 7-6. The senior fell to 9-2 on the year and dropped his first match of the season at the No. 5 position.
The Wildcats return to league play and hit the road for a 3 p.m. match at Wofford on Wednesday, Mar. 31.
