Wildcats Sweep Through Wofford in M. Tennis

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Wrapping up a stretch of four matches in five days, the Davidson men's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep of Southern Conference-foe Wofford on Wednesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Wildcats earned fifth 7-0 sweep of an opponent this year as they ran their league record to 4-2 and 10-5 overall. Wofford fell to 7-9 overall and saw it SoCon mark drop to 3-3.
Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the way in doubles action with their second straight win after an 8-7 victory at No.1. The No. 2 team of Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) took home their team-best 11th win with an 8-5 triumph over Wofford's Tom Wood and Stuart and Robertson. Finally, Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) inched their overall record closer to.500 (7-8) with an 8-1 win to seal up the point.
The winning continued into singles play as all six Wildcats earned wins for the 7-0 league victory. All six of the Wildcats regrouped after falling in their previous match to Brown, 7-0, to get back on the winning track. Schafer improved to 9-4 on the year with a three-set win (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) at No. 1.
Noble split his first two sets (2-6, 7-6), before earning a super tiebreaker win, 10-2, over Robertson at No. 2.
Gee and Lyons each picked up their 11th and seventh wins, respectively at the No. 3 and 5 spots. Lyons needed an extra set vs. Alan Donald in taking a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Gee took home a straight set 6-2, 6-3 decision.
Mark matched Gee with his 11th singles win and evened his SoCon mark at 3-3 after a 6-4, 6-3 win over Paul Bartholomy at No. 4.
Burns became the third Wildcat this year to hit the double-digit mark in wins in singles with a super tiebreaker win, 10-8, after splitting his first two matches, 6-7, 7-5.
The Wildcats continue in league play with a 1 p.m. match at UNC Greensboro this weekend, Apr. 3.
