GREENSBORO, N.C. — Looking to keep pace in the Southern Conference race for a spot in the tournament, the Davidson men's tennis team took a hard loss, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at UNC Greensboro.
Only the top-four teams advance to the league tournament this year and Davidson entering Saturday's match was in fourth place. The tough defeat left the 'Cats at 4-3 in the league and 10-6 overall. They were one match ahead of Elon, which was 3-3 entering SoCon action this weekend. After rattling off a five-match win streak, Davidson has hit a bit of a skid lately, dropping three of its past four matches, including a pair of league matches.
UNCG kept pace with College of Charleston as the lone unbeaten teams in league play, moving to 6-0 and 13-3 overall.
Seeking to snap the Spartans' 12-match home win streak, the Wildcats did not start out as they had hoped, dropping the doubles point. The lone team to earn a win was the duo of Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) with a tiebreaker victory at No. 1, 8-7.
UNC Greensboro then sealed up the win by taking the first four singles matches, though the 'Cats gave the Spartans a battle in each of the matches, for the 5-2 win. After a 6-1 decision to start, Schafer forced a tiebreaker, but came up short in the end, 7-6 (1), at the No. 1 position.
Noble went the distance in forcing three sets in his match at No. 2. He took set two, 6-4, after falling 6-2 in the first one, but Arsel Kumdereli earned the singles point with a 6-3 triumph.
Freshman Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) also forced a three-set affair by taking the second set, 6-4. He then forced a tiebreaker in the final set, but fell 7-5 in the tiebreaker to fall, 7-6.
Davidson's two points came from the pair of Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) at No. 5 and 6. The duo have been two of the hottest Wildcats in the past few weeks and they continued their winning ways on Saturday.
Gee, a winner in 10 of his last 11 matches, which included a 10-match win streak, brought home a 6-3, 6-4 win over Timion Meijs at No. 5 to remain unbeaten in league matches at 7-0. The sophomore ran his overall singles record to a team-best 12-2, with nine of those wins coming at the No. 5 spot.
Burns also remained undefeated in league play at 7-0 after he earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory over William John at No. 6. The senior won for the ninth time in his past 11 matches as he improved to 11-2 on the year, with eight of those wins coming at the No. 6 position.
Davidson next hits the courts on Apr. 6 with a 3 p.m. match at Elon.
