DAVIDSON, N.C. — Five different Wildcats had multiple goals, led by Haley Cook's (Darien, Conn.) four scores, and the Davidson women's lacrosse team earned a 15-12 win in their home and conference-opener on Wednesday evening over Detroit Mercy at Richardson Stadium.
Davidson grabbed a six-goal lead after one half and held off a late Titan rally to move to 1-1 overall and pick up their first win in the newly formed National Lacrosse Conference. Detroit fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in league play.
Joining Cook in the scoring column was Keena Classen (Baltimore, Md.) with her first collegiate four-goal game, while Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.), Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) each chipped in two goals. Parker tied Anna Smith (Newburyport, Mass.) with two assists for game-high honors. Through the first two games, the freshman has a team-high seven points.
Detroit had four players net at least two goals, with Corina Mahorn putting in a team-best three. Zaynib Hamze, Anna Eidem and Lindsey Saunders each tallied two goals apiece.
The game was close through the first 12 minutes, with Cook scoring two of the Wildcats first four goals as the score was 4-3.
Classen then sparked a six-goal run by starting the rally at the 17:41 mark with her third goal of the half, and then capped off the run with her fourth score and 7:49 left in the half to give Davidson a 10-3 lead.
Emily Rahill (Ridgewood, N.J.) started the second half off with her first goal of the season off an assist from Crawford to give the Wildcats a 12-5 advantage.
Detroit started to find its offensive groove after Cook found the back of the net at the 22:33 mark by scoring four of the next five goals to cut the lead down to three at 14-11 and four minutes remaining. Lindsey Saunders started the scoring with her second goal in a five-minute stretch at the 18:05 mark. Emily Boissonneault, Hamze and Mahorn went on a three-goal run to cut the Wildcat lead down to three.
With 3:45 left in the half, Keitel put an insurance goal in for Davidson off a pass from Parker to make it 15-11, before the Titans' Mahorn registered her third goal for the final score of 15-12.
Goalkeeper Michele Pav (Golden, Colo.) picked up seven saves in earning her eighth career win between the pipes, while the Titans' Brett Yenger closed with 11 saves.
Both teams combined for 66 shots, putting 45 of them on goal. Davidson held a slight edge in groundballs, 22-21, with Cook and Erin McGuire (Bishopville, Md.) each picking up four. Cook also added a game-high five caused turnovers as Davidson forced 23 Titan turnovers in all.
Detroit's Boissonneault and Mel Hicks tied for the team-high honors in groundballs with five each, while Boissonneault had three caused turnovers.
The Wildcats remain at home as they will host Navy on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. The two squads have split the last two meetings, with Davidson earning a 15-10 win in 2008, and then Navy scoring a 13-6 win last year.
