DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson senior guard Brendan McKillop has been named a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, the NCAA and Lowe's announced today. He is one of 30 candidates selected from all Division I men's basketball schools in the country.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 2011 candidate class includes three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans from a year ago, nine student-athletes on the preseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, 16 players with grade point averages of 3.0 and above and eight from teams ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 25.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
McKillop was one of two Wildcats to start all 31 games last season. He ranked first in the league and 10th nationally in assist to turnover ratio, dishing out 124 assists with just 46 turnovers, while averaging 10.2 points a game and canning a team-high 80 3-pointers.
McKillop volunteered at the Stewards of the Game Youth Christian basketball camps for three summers. He participated and assisted with the Davidson Buzzkill: Nothing But Nets fundraiser event and the Kicks for 'Cats event. He donated hour-long workouts with children that were auctioned off at the Catholic Campus Ministry fundraiser and has volunteered to be a guest motivational speaker at St. Mark's Catholic Middle School basketball camps.
Davidson plays a home exhibition game Saturday, Nov. 6, against Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. in John M. Belk Arena before opening the season at Penn Nov. 13. That contest is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff in historical The Palestra in Philadelphia.
