SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Davidson offense came to life in the second half, scoring three goals on 11 shots to defeat Wofford, 3-0 in Southern Conference men's soccer action Friday night at Snyder Field.
Junior forward Mark Millard (Oak Ridge, N.C.) scored the first and third goals for Davidson (5-4-3), while junior Allen Page (Columbus, Ga.) headed in the Wildcats' second goal. With the loss, Wofford fell to 1-6-2 overall, 0-2 SoCon.
The game was aired live on Fox Soccer Channel as a part of the NSCAA Game of the Week series.
Shots were even at just three apiece after both teams excelled defensively in the first half, but the Wildcats' offense broke through early in the second and fired off four shots in the first six minutes.
The first Wildcat shot of the second half found the back of net just two minutes, six seconds in. Senior midfielder Peter Shelton (Raleigh, N.C.) crossed a ball into the six-yard box, and Millard put it in the back of the net to break the scoreless deadlock.
After Page just missed on a pair of headers early in the half, the third one proved to be the charm in the 71st minute. Freshman midfielder Alex Givens (Raleigh, N.C.) sent a corner kick from the left to the right post, and Page found it for his first goal of the season.
Millard added to Davidson's advantage in the 77th minute, intercepting a Wofford clearing attempt and deftly chipping it over the goalkeeper, just under the crossbar, from 20 yards out.
Senior forward Yannick Pilgrim (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) led Davidson with four shots, two on goal. He had the 'Cats best chance to score in the first half sending a shot just wide from 18 yards out in the 19th minute.
The Wildcats outshot Wofford, 14-10. Junior goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.) made three saves to earn his career-best fourth shutout of the season. Andrew Drennan did not face a shot on goal in the first half as the Wofford goalkeeper, and was relieved by Ben Limbaugh for the second half. Limbaugh made three stops.
Davidson will return to action Tuesday at Furman.
Notes: The two-goal performance from Millard was his second of the season after notching two goals and an assist in the season opener against Marist … Givens' assist was the first of his career … former Davidson head coach Charlie Slagle was the sideline reporter for Fox Soccer … Davidson is now 18-2 against Wofford.
