DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's basketball team has been picked third in the Southern Conference South Division by the league's 12 head coaches, the conference announced today. Sophomores Jake Cohen and JP Kuhlman were named to the preseason all-conference team.
Defending champion Wofford is picked to win the South, and Appalachian State is picked to win the North. College of Charleston senior guard Andrew Goudelock was named Preseason Player of the Year, and the Cougars were picked second in the South.
Davidson returns eight lettermen from last season's team, which went 16-15 overall and 11-7 in the SoCon South Division to place third. The Wildcats have four of their top six scorers back, including Cohen and Kuhlman, who each earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors - Kuhlman from the league's head coaches and Cohen from the conference media association. They were both named to the All-Freshman Team by the league's head coaches and media association.
Kuhlman, who also earned Mid-Major Freshman All-America accolades from CollegeInsider.com, averaged 12.6 points, 3.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds while averaging 33 minutes a contest. The 6-foot-4 guard ranked 13th overall in the SoCon in scoring, eighth in assists, 12th in free-throw percentage (.720), fourth in 3-point percentage (.415), 10th in assist to turnover ratio (1.2) and eighth in minutes played.
Cohen, who earned second-team all-state accolades from the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association, led the Wildcats in scoring with 13.3 points a game to go along with 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots a contest. The 6-foot-10 forward ranked 11th in the SoCon in scoring, 11th in field goal percentage (.466), 13th in rebounding, 14th in free-throw percentage and seventh in blocked shots.
The Citadel was picked fourth in the South followed by Furman and Georgia Southern. Western Carolina was second in the North followed by Chattanooga, UNCG, Elon and Samford.
Davidson will play its Red/Black Scrimmage Saturday morning at 10:45 a.m. in John M. Belk Arena, prior to the home football game against Dayton. The scrimmage is open to the public, and admission is free. The Wildcats play a home exhibition game Saturday, Nov. 6, against Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. in John M. Belk Arena before opening the season at Penn Nov. 13. That contest is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff in historical The Palestra in Philadelphia.
