LEWISVILLE, N.C. – Current Davidson head men's soccer coach Matt Spear and a fellow tri-captain for the Wildcats' 1992 College Cup team, Craig Omili, were inducted into the Forsyth Country Day School Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday for their accomplishments as student-athletes.
The Fury Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes members of the Forsyth Country Day School family who have distinguished themselves as outstanding contributors to Fury athletics, demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship and character, and established high standards of excellence in athletic achievement.
Spear followed his siblings Michael, Mary and Christopher in attending and competing for FCDS. He excelled in both soccer and tennis in each of his three years competing for the Furies, starting as a midfielder on the pitch and playing at No. 1 singles on the court.
Soccer was where Spear and Omili, also a multi-sport athlete, enjoyed the most success, as both received all-conference and all-state honors. The duo co-captained the 1988 team, leading the Furies to the Piedmont Athletic Conference of Independent Schools tournament championship and the state finals.
Both continued their academic and athletic careers at Davidson College. As tri-captains of the 1992 soccer team, the All-Southern Conference performers helped lead the Wildcats to the Southern Conference Championship and then all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
Spear became the head coach of the Davidson men's soccer team in 2001, and most recently guided the Wildcats to an 11-7 record during the 2009 season, including 4-1 wins over No. 25 South Carolina and No. 6 Duke. Soccer America ranked the 'Cats as high as 21st in the nation following the victory over the Blue Devils.
Earlier this month, Spear coached one of the four teams assembled by Major League Soccer to compete in their annual pre-draft combine. A total of 15 of the 18 players on his “Predator X” team were drafted in the ensuing MLS SuperDraft.
After guiding the 'Cats to a SoCon Championship in 2003, Spear was named the SoCon Coach of the Year, the NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year and a National Coach of the Year finalist.
Spear ranks second only to 1992 National Coach of the Year and Davidson Hall of Famer Charlie Slagle in career victories (85) at the helm of the Wildcats. In his nine years on the sidelines, Spear has coached 14 All-SoCon performers, six All-South Region performers, one All-American honoree (John Latting, 2005) and four Academic All-Americans (Chris Norbet, Soren Johnson, Mac Wilkie, and Charlie Reiter).
