Davidson Scores 5-2 League Win over The Citadel in M. Tennis

CHARLESTON, S.C. —The Davidson men's tennis team swept the doubles play for only the second time this year and continued their strong play into singles action on their way to scoring a 5-2 Southern Conference win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon to get back on the winning track.
Davidson, which had dropped its past seven matches, improved to 6-14 overall and netted their second league win of the season (2-7). The Citadel fell to 8-11 and 1-6 in SoCon action.
For the fist time since opening the year, Davidson took all three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Leading the way was the duo of sophomore Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and senior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.). The No. 2 team earned their third straight doubles win by the count of 8-4 over Michael Kociecki and Martin King.
Davidson also took scores of 8-2 and 8-6 at the No. 1 and 2 spots. The tandem of Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Eric Noble (Fayetteville,?N.C.) along with the team of Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.)?and Brandon Byrd (Raleigh, N.C.) each halted their two-match skids in doubles play, while tallying their second wins each as a team.
Continuing their strong play from doubles into singles was Lyons, Myers and Gee to help the Wildcats seal the win. Lyons recorded his fifth win of the year at No. 2, and eighth overall, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Kociecki.
Myers and Gee picked up their 10th and ninth singles wins, respectively of the season at No. 3 and 4. Myers forced a third-set super tie breaker with a 6-3 second set win, then took home the tie breaker win, 10-5. Gee rolled in his match agianst King, 6-3, 6-0.
Rounding the Wildcats victory was sophomore Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) with a straight set 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Derek Dickey at No. 5.
Davidson wraps up its regular season with two matches next week, starting with a SoCon tilt against Appalachian State on Thursday, Apr. 16. It will also play Charlotte in the final match of the season, Apr. 17.
