DAVIDSON, N.C. — Finishing out their Southern Conference slate of matches before the league tournament next week, the Davidson men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback at the hands of visiting Appalachian State on Thursday afternoon at Covington Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats fell to 6-15 overall and closed out league play at 2-8. The Mountaineers pushed their win streak to three straight to improve to 14-9 overall and evened its league mark at 5-5.

ASU swept through both the singles and doubles matches in taking home the league win.

In doubles play, Davidson dropped two matches of 8-4 at No. 1 and 3, while falling 8-2 at the No. 2 spot. The duo of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) saw their three-match win streak come to an end as a team in doubles play as they lost the 8-2 match to Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs.

Singles play saw both Myers and freshman Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) nearly pull of wins at their two positions. Myers forced a third-set super tie breaker by picking up a 7-5 decision in the second set. The senior then battled back-and-forth in the tie breaker with Jacobs, before Jacobs of ASU prevailed 14-12.

Like Myers, Gee also forced a third set super tie breaker when he came back for a 6-4 second set win after dropping the first set, 6-4. In the super tie breaker, Gee fell behind early and never was able to regroup, falling 10-5 to Philip Kloc at No. 5.

Seeing his first singles action of the season was senior Brandon Byrd (Raleigh, N.C.) as he played at No. 6. Byrd was shutout his first set, but was able to score three games in the second set, before seeing his afternoon end at 6-3 to Alain Humblet. The senior also teamed up with Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) in the doubles play at No. 3.

Davidson concludes its 2009 regular season with a 2:30 match against Charlotte on Friday. The match was originally scheduled last week, but was moved to Friday due to a rain out.
