DAVIDSON, N.C. — Eric Noble, Walker Lyons and Scott Myers each took home singles wins at the top three spots, but the Wildcats fell one point short in their quest for a non-conference win, dropping a 4-3 decision to University of Illinois at Chicago on Monday afternoon in men's tennis.
Davidson dropped its second straight match to fall to 5-9 on the season, while UIC improved to 7-4 overall.
After losing out on the doubles point by dropping all three matches, the Wildcats came back with solid wins from Noble (No. 1), Lyons (No. 2) and Myers (No. 3) for a brief lead in the match. Noble ran his singles mark to 7-6 with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Sebastian Lystad.
Lyons easily handled his opponent with a 6-1, 6-4 win, while Myers earned a decision over Adriano Liccardo after the Flames player had to retire due to an injury. Both players had split their first two sets. Myers' registered his seventh win on the year and sixth at the No. 3 position.
UIC then took straight decisions at No. 6 and No. 4 to bring it down to the No. 5 battle between the Flames Nate Kirk and Arie Hefter. After dropping his first set, 6-2, Hefter stormed back for a 6-4 win in the second set to force the third set. The sophomore fell short though in the final set, as Kirk shutout the Wildcat by the score of 6-0.
Davidson returns to Southern Conference play when it hosts UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Mar. 28 for a 1 p.m. match.
