CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Davidson women's tennis team concluded their five-match road swing in winning fashion by sweeping past Southern Conference foe Western Carolina, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon to capture their first league win of the season.
Davidson (5-7, 1-2 SoCon) halted its four-match losing streak by taking all six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches for its 22nd victory in the all-time series. The Wildcats are 22-0 against the Catamounts, who fell to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in SoCon action this year.
Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) and Molly McDevitt (Albuquerque, N.M.) along with Romina Clemente (Canton, Ohio) and Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Wildcats to the doubles point to start the match by teaming up at the No. 2 and 3 positions for 8-3 wins. Three of those 'Cats along with Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.), Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) then capped off the match with straight set wins at all six singles positions for the 7-0 win. Berry pushed her winning streak to a season team-best four straight with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Amanda Massey at No. 2. The junior is a team-best 8-4 on the year.
Galainena snapped a personal four-match losing streak by shutting out Emily Turke at the No. 6 spot, while Rauh nearly matched Galainena, giving up just one game in her two-set sweep of Ainhoa Iglesias at No. 3. The duo each have four wins apiece this season in singles action.
