DAVIDSON, N.C. — Rachel Culp scored a career-high seven goals and assisted on two others in leading the Virginia Tech Hokies over the Davidson Wildcats, 20-5, in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday evening at Richardson Stadium.
Culp, coming off a six-goal game in her last contest, finished the contest with nine points in leading the Hokies (3-4) to their second straight win. The senior attacker scored four of the Hokies' first five goals of the game and Virginia Tech never looked back in earning the 15-goal win.
Davidson (4-2) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end as the Wildcats start a stretch where they play three games this week.
The Wildcats got single goals from Becky Horton, Jen Crawford, Heather Frohman, Haley Cook and Jenna Mugele.
Frohman's second score of the season came a nice long pass from Horton from the clear line to the eight-meter circle that brought the 'Cats to within one, 2-1, in the early goings of the first half, but VT rattled off four straight goals to push its lead out to 6-1 and 9:06 remaining in the half.
Cook's and Horton's ninth and 14th goals of the season made the score 8-3, before Allie Emala added another Hokie goal before halftime for a 9-3 VT lead at intermission. Horton also picked up her second and third assists on the season in the game.
Culp scored the first two goals of the second half for Virginia Tech and Davidson never recovered in falling 20-5.
Besides Culp's seven scores, the Hokies had four other players have multi-goal games, led by Emala's four goals. Ryan Rotanz chipped in with three goals, while Jessica Nonn and Shannon Bone had two goals each.
Emala was credited with an assist, one of five for Virginia Tech on the evening.
Between the pipes, junior Michelle Pav had a busy evening facing 45 Hokie shots and earning nine saves. For VT, Kari Morrison faced 13 shots and stopped five of them.
Davidson's defense did force the Hokies into 18 turnovers as six Wildcats closed with two or more groundballs. Pav picked up four of them, followed by Horton's three.
Davidson wraps up its seven-game homestand to open the 2009 campaign with a 6 p.m. contest against Suny Cortland on Thursday.
