ELON, N.C. — Senior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a 28-point effort and registered her 13th double-double of the season in sparking the Wildcat women's basketball team to a 79-65 Southern Conference win at Elon, halting their six-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon.
Davidson, which snapped its longest losing streak since the 2001-02 campaign by placing three players in double figures, improved to 9-14 overall and 8-6 in the SoCon. Elon fell to 2-22 overall and 0-15 in league games.
To go along with her game-high 28 points, Robinson hauled in 12 rebounds in helping the Wildcats to a 42-36 edge on the boards. The senior hit 11-of-20 shots from the floor and netted all five free throws, scoring in double figures for the 16th time in the her last 18 games. It was the fourth time this year Robinson has hit the 20-point mark.
The senior picked up 10 of 16 second-half points in a seven-minute stretch that saw the Wildcats open up a 62-47 lead after Elon had closed to within six points, 40-34, to open the second period. The Phoenix opened the new stanza on an 8-2 run.
Also hitting the double-digit mark was the guard combo of Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) and Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) with 17 and 14 points, respectively. The duo halted a late charge by Elon with back-to-back treys at the 1:37 and 1:11 mark to pushed the Wildcats' lead out to 77-61 on their way to the 14-point triumph.
Elon countered Davidson's three scorers in double figures with four of its own, led by Tiara Gause's 22 points. Julie Taylor scored all 12 of her points from behind the arc, while Amber Wall and Urysla Cotton each closed with 10 points.
Taylor's two shots from long range, followed by a short jumper by Wall had brought the Phoenix to within eight points at the 2:42 mark, before Thompson and Lax drained their back-to-back treys to put the game out of reach.
Gause got the first half going with eight of Elon's first 10 points to open the contest as the Wildcats trailed 10-6 in the early stages of the half. Gause closed the half with 12 points.
Davidson responded with a 14-2 run, started by a three-ball from Thompson and capped off by a three-point play from Monica Laune (Ashland, Neb.) to grab a 20-12 lead it would never give back with 9:04 left on the clock. Laune finished the game with eight points to lead the Wildcat bench.
Later, Robinson went on a scoring surge of her own, dropping in eight straight points to push the Wildcat advantage out to nine at 32-23 and 2:08 remaining in the half. The senior finished the first period with 12 points and was one of two 'Cats to hit the double-digit mark in the half, joining Lax, who netted 10 points, including the last bucket of the half for a 38-26 Wildcat lead.
Robinson helped the Wildcats dominate inside as Davidson scored 42 of its 79 total points in the paint. The 'Cats also picked up 17 second chance points, while capitalizing on 21 Elon miscues with 25 points off Phoenix turnovers.
Davidson finished the contest shooting 47.6 percent from the field and were even better from the line with a 14-for-17 effort (82.4 percent) at the charity stripe. The Wildcat defense held its 11th opponent of the season under 40 percent shooting as Elon closed at a 39 percent clip.
The Wildcats return home to start a three-game stretch when they first play UNC Greensboro, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
