SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) hit the 1,000-point mark for her career with 15 points, but Davidson ran into a well-balanced attacking Wofford squad and dropped its sixth straight with an 86-72 setback on Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena in Southern Conference action.
Davidson, on its longest losing streak since the 2001-02 campaign when it dropped six in a row near the end of the season, fell to 8-14 overall and 7-6 in league play. Wofford halted its five-game skid to move to 4-16 overall and 2-10 in the SoCon.
For the second time this year the Wildcats had two players hit for double-doubles in a game led by Robinson's 11 rebounds to go with her 15 points. The senior post player became the 12th 'Cat in program history to hit the 1,000-point plateau for a career when she netted a layup on an offensive putback at the 9:48 mark of the second period.
Robinson's double-double was the 12th of the season, a SoCon-best after she tallied 14 double-doubles last year.
Fellow senior Mandy Halbersleben (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied her second career double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, while junior Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) dropped in a game-high 21 points, 18 of them coming in the first half. Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) rounded out the quartet of Wildcats to score in double digits with 11 points.
Wofford's Natalie Gramblin (20), Maddie Helms (18) and April Moorhouse (14) all hit the double-digit mark in points. Helms and Moorhouse led a Terrier bench that outscored Davidson's 45-9. Ten Terriers in all etched their names in the scorers book in the 14-point win.
Tied at 31-all after a Halbersleben layup, Wofford used a 17-6 run at the end of the first period to take control of the game. Helms led the way, draining three of her five first-half three-balls in the last four minutes of the half, including a buzzer-beating trey from the left corner, and finished the half with 15 points.
The first half saw both teams combine for 85 points, with Wofford draining 51.5 percent of its shots for a 48-37 lead. The Terriers were even better from three-land, canning 7-of-13 shots for a 53.8 percent clip. For the game, Wofford netted 11-of-22 attempts from behind the arc.
The second period saw Wofford score the first seven points of the half to set the tone early, and later pushed its lead out to 25 points (68-43) on a Moorhouse layup with 12:01 left in the game.
Davidson got no closer than the final score when Thompson canned her fifth trey of the game with just one second on the clock. She closed the contest 5-of-9 from behind the arc for her fourth career 20-point game.
Davidson was once again hurt by its turnovers. The Wildcats coughed the ball up 25 times, resulting in 30 Terrier points. Wofford's Liz Miller led a scrambling Terrier defense with a career-high 10 steals to go along with seven assists, five rebounds and five points.
The Wildcats wrap up their three-game road swing with a 2 p.m. contest at Elon on Saturday, Feb. 7. The game will be televised on SportSouth.
