DAVIDSON, N.C. – After taking an early lead behind a pair of career-first goals, the Davidson Field Hockey team held on and defeated Georgetown, 3-2, Friday evening in their home opener at Belk Turf Field.

The 'Cats' first strike came at the 20-minute mark of the first half, when junior Lisa Landoe took a lift shot off a penalty corner pass from senior Tyler Kirkland and put the ball in the back of the cage. Fellow senior Britti Himelfarb was also credited with the assist, the first of her two on the night.

Just before halftime, freshman Christine Rua scored her first-career goal via a penalty shot to put the Wildcats up, 2-0, a lead they took into the break. Davidson Head Coach Ginny Sutton saw a difference in her team after taking the early lead.

“We needed to win this game to build our confidence,” she said. “Finding the back of the net tonight was a big relief after a pair of frustrating offensive games, and to find it twice in the first half gave our girls a boost going into the rest of the game.”

Georgetown's comeback attempt began in the 48th minute when they lit up the scoreboard on a shot by Micaela O'Toole that snuck into the bottom left corner of the goal, just past Davidson goalkeeper Christa Goeke. The Hoyas tied the game at the 62:06 mark, when Kristen Volpe collected a through pass in a crowded circle in front of the goal, taking the shot from the middle of the field and putting the score at an even 2-2.

Davidson was not raddled by the sudden change in momentum, however, using their precision and speed to keep the pressure on the offensive end, culminating in Claire Perry's game-winning score with three minutes remaining. The scoring play was initiated by Himelfarb beginning a breakaway toward the Hoya goal, then sending a pass back to Perry at the top of the circle, where the sophomore let loose with a rocket into the lower right-hand corner of the goal. In keeping with the theme for the night, it was Perry's first career score as a collegian.

Goeke recorded five saves in 70 minutes in goal, pushing her season total to 11 in a pair of appearances, good for a .733 save percentage.  Goeke's performance was a part of a total team effort on the night, according to Sutton.

“We really put a lot of things together tonight that we have been working on all year,” she said. “We were a lot more organized and worked really hard for 70 minutes to come out with the win. Our effort was at the level it needs to be for us to continue to be successful. I was very impressed by our play tonight.”

The win pushes the 'Cats record to 1-2, while Georgetown falls to 0-3 on the year. Davidson has now won six-straight in the series between the two teams, and leads the all-time series 7-4.

The Wildcats will now look to go 2-0 on the weekend when the welcome the VCU Rams to Belk Turf Field on Saturday. Game time for the matchup is set for 3 p.m. Fans who cannot make it out to the field can follow all the action via live stats, found by clicking here.
